My invention relates to an absorbent cotton device to be used in connection with bottles of medicine, tablets and the like to prevent disintegration and deterioration of the medicine,

5 tablets and the like. It is usual in bottles containing tablets and medicines to use a bunch of absorbent cotton or the like above the medicine in the bottle to prevent disintegration and deterioration of the medicine. This cotton is loose and is diflicult to remove from the bottle and to replace in position in the bottle. Therefore, the objects of my invention are:

First, to provide an absorbent cotton device for medicine bottles which may be readily and easily placed in position in the bottle and be readily and easily removed therefrom Second, to provide a device of this class with handle means which is readily accessible from the open end of the bottle for removing the absorbent cotton therefrom, but may be positioned so that the bottle may be provided with a cap with the device in position immediately below the cap;

Third, to provide a device of this class which provides a handle for the absorbent cotton which may be readily and quickly attached to a bunch I of absorbent cotton so that new and fresh cotton may be quickly arranged in connection with the handle portion; 7, Fourth, to provide a device of this class which permits the absorbent cotton to spread immediately below the neck of the bottle when pressed downwardly therein and form a substantial closure between the medicine in the bottle and the neck or open end of the bottle;

Fifth, to provide a handle which may be quickly applied to a bunch of absorbent cotton and rigidly secured thereto so that the handle may be used for shifting the absorbent cotton into and 40 out of the bottle opening;

Sixth, to provide a device of this class which is very simple and economical of construction, easy to operate, efficient in its action, and which will not readily deteriorate or get out of order.

With these and other objects in view as will appear hereinafter, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and

arrangement of parts and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly 50 set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this application in which:

Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional view of the 55 upper portion of a bottle showing my absorbent cotton device in position in the upper portion of the bottle and showing the cap in position over the opening of the bottle; Fig. 2 is a similar view of the bottle with the capremoved and showing the absorbent cotton device partially removed 5 from the bottle; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the device alone showing a portion in elevation to facilitate the illustration.

The bottle I and cap 4 are of a conventional type bottle and cap. A bunch of absorbent cotton 3 is selected or taken from a larger bunch the size of the bunch being adapted to fit snugly in 15 the neck of the bottle when in compact form and will spread out as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing when it is shifted downwardly below the neck of the bottle all as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. Around the middle of this bunch is secured 20 a portion of the handle member 2. This handle member 2 consists of a loop 2a formed intermediate the ends of a piece of wire, which is wound upon itself at 2b; then the members are spread at 20, which extend around the middle of the bunch of absorbent cotton 3 and the extended ends are twisted upon themselves at 211 shown best in Fig. 3 so that the bunch of absorbent cotton 3 is secured between the two members 20 and provide an extended handle loop 2a, which is 30 adapted to be grasped by the finger and thumb, or some pointed instrument may be used in connection with the loop 2a for drawing the handle loop outwardly then grasped between the fingers and thumb and withdrawn from the bottle after which some of the contents of the bottle may be emptied, the bunch of absorbent cotton 3 may be grasped by the thumb and fingers and started into the top of the opening; then the handle or loop portion 2a is grasped by the fingers and thumb and the bunch of cotton is'pressed down into the bottle until it reaches the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing and the cap may be replaced.

Though I have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions, I do not wish to be limited to this particular construction, combination, and arrangement, but desire to include in the scope of my invention, the construction, combination, and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In an absorbent cotton device for.bottles, a bunch of absorbent cotton, and a handle therefore comprising a loop portion twisted around a portion of said bunch and provided with an extended looped handle.

2. In an absorbent cotton device for bottles, a bunch of absorbent cotton, a handle therefore comprising a loop portion twisted around a portion of said bunch and provided with an extended looped handle, said handle made of wire and twisted between the loop portion around the cotton bunch and the looped handle.

3. In an absorbent cotton device for bottles, a

bunch of absorbent cotton, a handle therefore comprising a loop portion twisted around a por- 7 tion of said bunch and provided with an extended looped handle, said handle made of wire and twisted between the loop portion around the cotton bunch and the looped handle, and said wire twisted at its extended end around the portion of the cotton.

4. In an absorbent cotton device for bottles, the combination with a bunch of absorbent cotton, of a wire secured around a portion of said cotton and provided with an extended looped handle extending from one side thereof.

5. In an absorbent cotton device for bottles, the combination with :a bunch of absorbent cotton, of a wire secured around a portion of said cotton and provided with an extended looped handle extending from one side thereof, said wire being twisted between the handle loop portion and the main loop portion around the bunch of cotton.
