UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES D. CLEMMONS, OF HANOVER, INDIANA.
SLATE-CLEAN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 395,121, dated December 25, 1888.
Application filed August 14, 1383- Serial No. 282,705. (No model.)
T0 at whom it nut-y concern.-
Be it known that 1', JAMES D. CLEnMoNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hanover, in the county of Jefferson and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and use- :ful Improvements in Slate-Cleaners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has relation to improvements in that class of devices known as slate and blackboard cleaners, and is designed as an improvement upon those carrying a sponge or absorbent material in a receptacle carrying a valve for feeding the moisture thereto.
The invention will be fully understood from the following description and claim, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1. a side view of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line no of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of a modification.
Referring by letter to the said drawings,A indicates a tubular receptacleavhich is divided by a transverse partition, a, into a sponge-receptacle, b, and a water-rcceptacle, c, the latter being of a greater capacity than the former, and is provided at its outer end with an aperture, (1, designed to be closed by a cork, B, which is secured to the tubular frame or receptacle by means of a cord or the like.
The forward end of the sponge-receptacle is annularly perforated around its mouth to receive securing-threads, as shown, for holding the spongein position.
0 indicates the sponge, which is secured in the receptacle b by threads, so that it may be held away from the valve and allow the latter to move freely, as will be presently described. This sponge-receptacle has an elongated slot, 6, for the passage of the valve-rod E, which has one end secured to the transverse partition a and bears a valve, f, designed to close the aperture g in the said partition. This valve or rod hasits outer end bent angularly, and terminates in a thumb or finger portion, h, which may be conveniently manipulated whileheld in the hands as a pen or pencil.
Vhen the device is not in use, the sponge may be covered by a cap, such as F.
In Fig. 4 of the drawings I have shown a modification of my invention. In this modification, instead of depending upon the resiliency'of the rod E, I provide a pivoted valverod, G, and form a collar thereon, and between this collar and the inner walls of the spongereceptacle I surround the said rod with a spiral spring, g, and from the partition a, I eX tend a small tube, 7:, with its outer end vertically exposed to receive the lower end of the valve-rod. This tube communicates with the. water-chamber C, and the valve-rod is guided. in position by means of an arm, Z, having an aperture therein.
Having described my invemtion, what I claim is- As an improved article of manufacture, the slate-cleaner herein described, consisting, essentially, of the tubular case having an aperture at one end and a cork for closing the same, and divided by a partition, a, into a water-receptacle, O, and a sponge-receptacle, b, and the said partition having an aperture, g, the sponge-receptacle being slotted at e and perforated at its outer end, as shown, the valve-rod having a finger-piece on its outer end secured at its inn er end within the spongereceptacle and carrying a valve, f, toclose the aperture in the said partition, and the sponge sewed in the outer end of the said sponge-receptacle, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I aftixmysignature in presence of two witnesses.
.l'AS. l). GLEMMONS.
