Description

-J. A. RIHL. L-AST BLOCK IASTENER.
APPLICATION FILED MAR- 17. 1906- UNITED. sTATEs PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN A. RIHL, or PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ssie-Noa oFoNE- THIRD TO ALBERT A. REDIFER AND ONE-THIRD TO 'rnoMAs-MAr i LACK, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
LAST-BLOCK FASTENER- Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 17, 1906. .Serial No. 306.605-
improved means for adjustably securing the instep-piece to the body of a lastblock, it being further desired to utilize the flexible cord for operating the fastening means to connect the instep-piece and said body for the purposedof preventing them from becoming separate These objects I secure as hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a lastblock, showing my invention as applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the last-block shown in Fig. 1, illustrating my invention in detail; and Fig. 3 is an inverted plan of the insteppiece, further illustrating one of the detail features of my invention.
One frequent source of annoyance when Working with last-blocks as hitherto known to the art has been due to the fact tllli the various means for detachably securing the instep-piece to the body of the block have been of such a nature that considerable time was necessarily expended in detaching said pieces, and, further, when a number of lastblock bodies and'instep-pieces were thrown together after use the parts constituting a complete last-block became separated, not only requiring considerable trouble and time in order to properly assemble the various sets, but also frequently resulting in the loss of the relatively small instep-pieces. By my invention I overcome these various objectionable features, since I provide means whereby the catch for holding the insteppiece and the last-block body together may be instantly operated to separate said parts, and Iso arrange this operating means that it is a practicable impossibility for the insteppiece and the last-block body to become separated.
Referring to the above drawings, A represents a last-block body having an insteppiece B fitted to it. This piece is detachably secured in position, partlybymeans of a doWer pin a, which fits into a suitable recess in the or recess a, formed partly in the last-block bod A and partly in the instep-piece B.
Sai bolt or catch normally extends partly in the portion a and partly in the portion b of the'above-mentioned recess, and I connect Patented Oct. 30, 19cc.
instep-piece, and artly by means of a slid I ing bolt or catch which operates in a hole it to the instep-piece A by means of a'spring- Wire 6 which passes through it and is provided at its opposite end with an eye for the reception of a screw or tack b. The bolt or catch b is made tubular for the reception of a flexible connecting-cord b, which ma be of.
any suitable material and held to said olt by means of the spring-wire 6 which passes through one end of it. The opposite end of said cord is fastened in any suitable manner to the last-block bod A, in-the present instance by being tightl y held in a hole in said body by means of a wedge (L The insteppiece B. is recessed to permit of the movement of the spring-wire b away from the ad-.
j acent surface of said ieceas, for example, when the bolt 1) is pulled into the portion b of the hole or recess by means of the cord b the normal position of the spring-wire being preferably that illustrated.
It will be seen that the bolt 12 and the pin a are so placed relatively to each other that the instep-piece B is tightly and firml held in position when once it has been place upon the last-block body by first entering the dowel-pin a into the recess of said piece, while permitting the bolt to be first moved into the portion 1) of its recess and afterward to spring out of said recess into the part a thereof when said two parts have been brought in line. I I
No ordinary force applied to the insteppiece is suflicient to detach it from the lastblock body, though if it be desired that these pieces be taken apart-as, for example, in order to Withdraw the structure from a shoe an outward pull upon the cord b draws the bolt 1) into the portion 5 of its recess and then results in the separation of said parts.
Owing to the fact that the ends of the cord 6 are respectively attached to the two pieces A and B constituting the last-block body, these latter cannot be separated or mixed with the similar parts of other last-blocks.
I claim 1. The combination of a last-block body,
an instep-piece, means for connecting said parts including a spring-actuated bolt carried by one of the parts, a cord having one end connected to one part of the last-bock, and a spring-piece engaging the cord and arranged to fasten it to said sliding bolt so as .to prevent the permanent separation of said parts, substantially as described.
2. A last-book consisting of a body portion, an instep-piece, a pin carried by one of said parts fitting in a recess in the other part, a tubular bolt carried by one of the parts and entering a suitable recess in the other, said bolt and pin being placed to tightly hold together said two parts, a spring attached to one of the parts and entering the tubular bolt, and a cord extending into the bolt and held therein by said spring, substantially as described.
3. A last-block consisting of a body por- 20 tion, an instep-piece, a pin on one of the parts fitting in a recess in the other part, a second recess formed partly in one piece and partly in the other, a tubular bolt movable in said second recess, a spring-Wire attached to one of the parts of the block, and a cord connected to the other part, said cord extending through the second recess and into the tubular bolt and the spring extending into the bolt so as to engage and retain the spring in position therein, substantially as described. In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence oi tWo subscribing Witnesses.
