Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
S. A. HUDSON, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
SWORD-CANE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 8,346, dated September 9, 1851.
T o all whom z' may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL AD'AMS HUD- SON, of Worcester, in the county of )Worcester and StateV of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved form of Sword- Cane; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon and making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the following several points forming a combination.
I attach a blade to a metallic rod (diagram 2, letter A) which rod is inclosed in a spiral spring (B) and passes through the cane as at (C in diagram 5), leaving an aperture at the foot of sword cane for the passage of the blade as at (D in No. l). The upper end of the rod being furnished with a screw (E No. 5) firmly attaches it to the handle (F No. 2), the handle being smaller than the shaft is made to slide within the shaft (G No. 4) just as far as I wish the blade to penetrate beyond it, (H No. 4) the spring acting on the handle (I No. 5) will after each stroke, force the blade again within the handle, where it is secured (when not in use as a weapon) by a stop screw (J No. 5) which entering just below the handle converts it into an apparently harmless walking stick.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A sword cane constructed substantially as herein set forth, viz., consisting of the rod with blade attached passing through the entire shaft and giving point beyond it, whether the said rod be or be not connected with a spiral spring, to draw the blade back into the handle; I do not claim the application of the spiral spring as an adjusting power, nor do I claim the screw applied as a stop, neither of which being substantially new.
