UNITED STATES CHARLES J. LORD AND GEORGE A. BROWNING, OF KINGFISHER OKLAHOMA TERRITORY.
PATENT OFFICE.
CALF-INEANER.
Specification of Letters Patent. I
Patented Oct. 30,1906.
Application filed December 15, 1906. Serial No. 291,921.
Be it known that we, CHARLES J. LORD and GEORGE A. BROWNING, citizens of the United States, residing at Kingfisher, in the county of Kingfisher and Territory of Okla homa, have invented a new and useful Calf- Weaner, of which the following is a specification.
-tively' light in'weight and which may be quickly attached to or detached from the ordinary form of halter now in use.
A further object of the invention is to pro- I vide a pair of attaching members adapted to engage the strap-connecting loop on each side of the halter, said members being pro-- vided with laterally-extending perforated lugs adapted to receive and support the opposite ends of the weaner.
A still further object is to generally improve this class of devices, so as to add to their utility and durability as well as to reduce the cost of manufacture.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood'that various changes in form, proportions, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the-specification, Figurel is a per spective view of a combined colt and calf weaner constructed in accordance with our invention, showing the same applied. Fig. 2
is a top plan view of the weaner and a portion of the halter detached. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective viewof one of the attaching members. f
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings. y
The improved device is shown by way of illustration attached to a halter of ordinary construction, and in which 5' designates the nose-band, 6 the cheek-straps, and 7 the chin-strap, the several straps being fastened together by the usual connecting-loops 8, as shown.
The weaner consists of a pair of curved parallel supporting members 9 and 10, preferably constructed of wire and bent to form a plurality of spaced loops or eyes 11, said members being spaced apart by terminal inwardly-extending coils 12, adapted to receivesuitable fastening devices hereinafter referred to. The loops or eyes 11 are preferably disposed in staggered relation, as shown, and threaded through said eyes and extending diagonally across the members 9 and 10 are a plurality of substantially U-shaped arms or prickers 13. The arms or priokers 13 are each preferably formed of a single piece of wire, an intermediate portion of which is bent inwardly to form an open loop 14, which engages the adjacent eyes 11 and serves to prevent accidental displace ment of the prickers, while the free end of said prickers diverge from the'members 9 and 10 and are sharpened to form terminal spurs or prods 15.
Attention is called to the fact that by havacross the members 9 and 10 the terminal ing the prickers 13 extending diagonally prods or spurs of said prickers will be disposed in staggered relation and spaced apart a uniform distance throughout the length of said members.
In order to support the several prickers in 1 of plates or clamping members'20 and 21, I
provided with laterally-extending cars 22, adapted to receive and support the terminal coils 12, there being alined openings 23 formed in the ears for the reception of a locking-pin or similar fastening device 24, which also passes through the coils 12 and serves to retain the weaner in position on the noseband. The plate 20 engages the inner side of the connecting-loop'S, while the ears on said plate pass through the loop and engage in position on the inner face of the connecting-loop with the lateral lugs extending through said loop, as shown, after which the plate 21 is placed on the opposite side of the loop and the terminal coils inserted between the ears, the locking-pin being subsequently passed through the perforations and coils, as
before stated.
In order to detach the weaner, it is merely necessary to remove the locking-pin, when the several parts may be readily removed and the halter used in the ordinary manner.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that there is provided an extremely simple and inexpensive device admirably adapted for the attainment of the ends in v1ew.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. The combination with a halter including a nose-band, of spaced supporting mem bers embracing the noseband, and prickers connecting the supporting members and ex tending diagonally across the same.
2. The combination with a halter including a nose-band, of spaced supporting mem-' bers detachably secured to the halter, and embracing the nose-band, and laterally-projecting prickers connecting the supporting members and extending diagonally across the same.
3. The combination with a halter including a nose-band, of spaced supporting members embracing the nose-band and provided with a plurality of spaced eyes or loops, and laterally-projecting prickers threaded through said loops and connecting the supporting members.
4. The combination with a halter, of supporting members detachably secured thereto and provided with a plurality of spaced eyes or loops, laterally-projecting prickers threaded through said loops, and a brace connecting the several prickers.
5. The combination with a halter including a nose-band, of spaced supporting members embracing the nose-band and provided with a plurality of spaced loops or eyes disposed in staggered relation, and laterallyprojecting prickers engaging said loops, and
serving to space the supporting members.
6. The combination with a halter, of supporting members detachably secured thereto, and provided With a plurality of spaced loops or eyes, and laterally-projecting prickers threaded through said eyes and each pro- .vided with an intermediate loop adapted to engage the adjacent eyes.
7. The combination with a halter, of supporting members detachably secured thereto and provided with a plurality of spaced loops or eyes, and laterally-projecting prickers threaded through said loops and. extending diagonally across the supporting members, said prickers being provided with terminal spurs disposed in staggered relation.
8. The combination with a halter, of a pair of parallel members detachably secured. thereto and spaced apart by terminal inwardlyextended coils, said members being provided. with a plurality of spaced eyes or loops, and laterally-extending prickers threaded through said eyes and provided with loops for engagement therewith.
9. The combination with a halter having oppositely-disposed loops, of an attaching member engaging one side of each loop and. provided with laterally extending ears projecting through the loops, a weaner supported between the ears, and fastening devices engaging the ears and the ends of the weaner.
10. The combination with a halter having oppositely-disposed loops, of an attaching member engaging one side of each loop and provided with laterally-proj ecting perforated. ears extending through said loops, at weaner provided with terminal coils fitting between the ears, and a locking-pin passing through the perforations in the ears and. engaging said coils.
11. The combination with a halter having oppositely-disposed loops, of a plate secured to one side of each loop and provided with laterally-projecting perforated ears extending through the adjacent loop, a plate socured to the opposite side of each loop and provided with similar ears having perforations formed therein adapted to register with the perforations in the adjacent ears, a weaner provided with terminal coils fitting between the ears of the inner plate, and a locking-pin passing through the perforations in said ears and engaging the terminal coils.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto aliixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
