. This invention relates to improvements indetachable stands designed ,particulary for holding milkpails, although the same is applicable and may be used for holding other receptacles; and the object of the invention is to provide a stand that maybe readily at- I 5 tached to or removed from thebottom of a milk-pail or other receptacle tohold the pail off from the ground or floor and at a proper height for use while milking. The invention consists generally in the constructions and combinations hereinafter described,'and particularly pointed out in the.
. claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved stand having a milk-pail supported thereon. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of a portion of .the stand. Fig.4 is aside elevation of the stand detached or separated go from the pail. Fig. 5 is abottom view showing the modified construction. Fig. 6 is a detail of the construction shown in Fig. 5.
In the drawings, 2 representsa plate preferably formed of galvanized iron or other ma- 3 5 terial and preferably of circular form and of proper size to receive and support a milk-pail or other receptacle. This plate is provided upon its under side with a series of sockets 3, which are secured to the plate in any suitable 4o manner. Said sockets preferably flare outward from the center of the plate, and inserted in the sockets are legs 15 of any desired length. The'edge of the plate is preferably provided with'the two outwardly and inwardly projecting lips4, each of which is of suflicient size to have the flange at the bot- 'tom of an ordinary milk-pail or similar receptacle inserted in the horizontal portion of said lip. The swinging locking-plate 5 is pivoted on the under side of the plate near one edge thereof, and this plate carries a lip 6, corresponding inform and shape to the lips 4. A latch 7 is also provided on the under side of the plate for holding the lookingplate 5 in engagement with the flange of the milk-pail. I
5 the hand In using the device the milkail is placed upon the plate 2, and the edge 0 the flange is shoved under the lips 4. The locking-plate 5 ,is then turned, so as to cause the lips 6. to en- .gage the flange of the pail, bringing the locking-plate in the position shown'in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The latch 7 is then swung into engagement with the rear end of the plate 5.
By this means the stand and pail are securely ,locked together, and when the pail is lifted by e or moved in any other Way the stand moveswith it as a part thereof.
In place of using the two fixedlips and the one movable lip, as shown inthe drawings already described, I provide a series of slides,
8, arranged to move radially in guides 9 upon the under side of the plate 2 andeach of saidslides being provided at its end with an upwardly and inwardly turned lip 10. In this instance I secure centrally upon the.underside of the plate 2 by a suitable stud or pivot a disk 11, having a handle 12. This disk is provided with a cam-slot 13 for each of the slides 8, and each'of said slides-is provided with a stud 14 in engagement with the cor- .respondingslide 13. By turning the disk 11,
which maybe done by'means of the handle 12,
the slides 8 are moved radially. When it is desired to fasten the stand to a milk-pail, the
bottom of the pail is placed on the plate 2, and the .disk 11 is rotated by-means of the handle 12, andthe slides 8 are all moved in-' ward until the lips 10 engage the flange at the bottom of the pail and lock the bottom of the pail and the plate 2 together. This form of the device may be used on pails or receptacles varying considerably in size.
In both of these constructions it will be noted that the stand maybe quickly fastented to the bottom of the flanged pail or receptacle and that it cannot be accidentally removed therefrom, but that when it is desired to remove it it can be quickly done by disengaging the movable lip or lips from the bot- IOC tom of the pail or receptacle. I construct these stands'in various sizes, so that the same are applicable to pails or receptacles of different sizes.
It is customary in milking cows for the milker to hold the pail between the knees;
but with this device instead of holding the weight of the pail and milk between the knees the pail is supported on two of the legs of the stand and is only tipped over enough to suit the milker, who only has to steady the pailto hold the same in position. With this device perfect cleanliness is secured, as the bottom of the pail never rests upon the floor or ground, and the pail can be emptied by taking hold of one of the legs of the stand for the purpose of tipping the pail. This prevents the milkers hands from becoming soiled. With the milk-pail secured upon this stand it is easier for the milker to follow a moving cow and it is also easier to prevent the pad from being kicked over by the cow. By the use of this stand the milk will always be kept perfectly clean and at the same time nearly one-halfof the work of milking will be saved.
I do not limitmyself to the details of construction, as. same may be varied in many particulars without departing from my invention.
I claim as my invention- 1. Thecombination, in a device of the class described, with the supporting-plate having suitable sockets on the under side thereof, and legs arranged in said sockets, of the clamping-lips arranged at the edge of said plate and means for engaging said lips with the flange of a pail or other receptacle ar ranged upon said plate, substantially as described. I
2. The combination, with the supporting plate and the series of legs secured to the under side thereof, of a pivoted clamping device projecting above said plate and adapted to clamp the bottom of a pail or other receptacle to said plate, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the plate 2, provided with the series of legs projecting from the under side thereof, of the clamping-lips projecting upwardly from the edge of said plate and adapted to engage the flange of a pail or other receptacle resting upon said plate, one of said lips being movable, and means for operating thepivoted lip, substantially as described.
4. The combination, with the circular plate 2 provided on its under surface with the series of legs, of the series of clamping-lips projecting upwardly above said plate and adapted to engage the flange of a pail or other receptacle placed. upon said plate, and means for moving and locking one of said lips, sul')stantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of April, 1906.
