J W. STRXCKLAND v RECEPTACLE OR HOLDER Filed August 7. 1925 f6 gvwmfloz JOHN W. Sm/c/QAND,
Patented June 8, 1926.
JOHN w. B'I'BIOKLAND, OI NASHVILLE, NORTH OABOiLINA.
I BIOBPILOLI OB HOLDER.
Application fled 4m My invention relates to drinking recepta- "cles, and has particular reference to means for preventing the tipping or accidental misplacement of such receptacles. 5. As is well known, the use of sanitary drinking cups, such as the ordina paper cup, is open to the ob ect1on that lt ls easily tipped over, particularly when carried upon a tray. In accordance with my invention I rovide a holder, which is preferably r1 id, or the reception of the paper cup. "his holder is secured to the tray or like support b means of a vacuum cup. This enables t e paper cup to be held against accidental tippin overand rmits of the same being moved rom the ho der by the user.
In the accompanyin drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are em loyed to designate like parts throughout t e same.
Figure 1 1s a perspective view of a holder embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the holder,
before the vacuum cup is depressed,
Figure 3 is a similar view after the vacuum cup has been depressed, andis engaging the tray,
Figure 4 is a central vertical section through the bottom of the holder and vacuum cup, showing the vacuum cup depressed, and,
l igurea is a plan view of the holder. In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration 1s shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 10 designates a receptacle or holder preferably formed of aluminum or any other suitable material. This hold sh'aped, to receive a sanitary drinking cup 4.0 11, which may be formed of paper or the like. The holder is adapted to be arranged upon a tray 12 or the like.
As more clearly shown in Figure 4, the bottom 13 of the holder is preferably spherically curved, and raised, and this bottom is equipped centrally with an opening 14,
for receiving a headqd, shank 15, of a vacuum cup 16. The headed shank is passed through the opening 14, and its head ener is preferably cup.

gages above the bottom 13, while the vacuum on is positioned within the recess beneath this bottom, and before it is depressed it projects downwardly below the lower end of the holder. This vacuum cup and shank are pgeferably integral and are formed of rub-- rgor any other suitable material.
In use, the holder is placed upon a tray 12 or the like, and the index finger may be inserted within the holder to engage with the headed shank 15, and in this manner, 00 the vacuum cup 16 may be depressed, until it has suction en agement with the tray, and will hold upon t e same, as is obvious. As clearly shown in Figure 4, the edges of the raise bottom 13 are ada ted to contact with the tray, while the suctlon cup has holding or locked engagement with the tray, and the holder is thus securely and rigidly attached to the tray. To remove the vacuum cup from the tra the holder is preferably given a lateral an upward movement.
While I have shown the vacuum cu as attached to a holder for a sanitary drinking cup, it is obvious that the. holder may itself, function as a drinkin cup.
It is to be understood t at the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of -m invention or the scope of the subjoine claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A receptacle or holder having a raised bottom affording a chamber and a marginal contacting edge, and a vacuum cup attached to said bottom, said cup being arranged wholly within said chamber when the receptacle or holder is forced downwardly so that said marginal contact edge engages the tray or the li e, whereby the cup will hold the rece tacle or holder upon the tray without ratt ing.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
JOHN W. STRIGKLAND.
