Letters Patent No. 83,369, dated October 27, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED HINGE AND IAs'rENER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all fwhpm it may concern Be it known that I, LEONARD Funken, of Tewkesbury, in the county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combination Support, Hinge, and Fastener for blinds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. i
The nature of my invention consists in providingr a suitable device, combining in itself a support, hinge,
whereby they can be easily operated from within, and, when in position, are fastened secure and firm, being free from all damage to the same.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Figure l represents a side elevation of my showing its position when the blind is closed.
Figure 2 represents a s ide elevation of the same, showing its position when open.
Figure 3 represents a plan of the device, showing its position when half-way open.
Figure 4 represents an end elevation of the device.
Similar' letters in the different figures indicate corresponding parts.
In the construction of my improved device, a represents the support-plate, it being provided with catches b and b', at each end, and supplied with the required device,
screw-holes to fasten the device as desired. Projecting from the centre, at right angles, near the bottom of this plate, a, and connected with the same, is the stem c, its end being provided with a pintle, d, which forms the male portion of the hinge, this pintle d projecting upward, and receives the female portion of the hinge, which is formed on and to the support-stand e, at its base, which\ constitutes a complete blind-hinge. Projecting at right angles with and connected to the base of the support-stand e, are the chambered wings f f, which form sockets for the stile, they being provided with suitable ears on each side for the reception of screws to fasten the same to the blind. lhrough these Wings, j f, openings or slots vare made, which allow the catches b and b to project through sufficientlyvto receive the latches h and t, which firmly fasten and secure the blind as desired, these latches h and i being pivoted to the wings f f, one end of which being supplied with a projection which assists in operating the same, the latch t' projecting through the base of the support e, which is used in fastening the blind back when open, as represented in fig. 2 of the drawings; the latch h projecting in an opposite direction, and is used to fasten the blind when closed, as represented in fig. 1 of the drawings.
The support e, being fastened to the stile of the blind, and hung on the pintle cl,tl 1e plate a, firmly secured to the building, the operator with ease, from the inside of the building, swings back or opens the blind at will, and fastens the same by means of the latch i'operating in the catch h', and closes and fastens the same,at his'will and pleasure, by means of the latch h., which operates in the catch b. And when the blind is in this position, as shown in g. l, it is p er-v fectly secure from any attemptmf opening or operating the latch 7L, from without, constituting both lock and fastener to the closing of the blind.
These latches, hand c', being in close proximity to the hinged side of the blind, makes them convenient to be operated from within, without the usual unnatural way of reaching the hand and arm out of the window.
Thus it will be seen that the improved device, constitutes and combines a case and support for the stile, and hinge and fastener for the blind, making a cheap, permanent, compact, simple, and reliable support and fastener to blinds.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is-.
The combination and arrangement of the support e, with its stem c and` pintle d, latches h and t', and
catches b and b', and wings f f, with or Without the vplate a, when arranged to operate as and for the purpose described and set forth.
LEONARD FELKER.
