Beit known that I, WALTER SCOTT, a citizen of England, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Collars, of which the following is a specification.

My invention pertains to collars for personal wear; and it contemplates the provision of a simple and ineX ensive turneddown collar constructed wit 1 a view of presenting a novel and neat appearance and at the same time facilitatinoP the tightening and the proper placing of the knot of what is known as a four-in-hand necktie.

Other advantageous features peculiar to my invention will be fully understood from the following description and claim when taken in connection with the accompanyingl drawings, forming part of this speciiication, in Which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the collar constituting the present and preferred embodiment of my invention; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail transverse section, taken in the plane indicated by the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by arrow.

Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in both of the views of the drawings.

My novel collar comprises a body-band A, formed of linen or other material suitable to the purpose of the invention, and a turneddown flap B, formed of similar material and having its upper edge connected to the corresponding edge of the body-band A through the medium of a bight C, as best shown in Fig. 2.

The body-band A of the collar is provided at its middle and at points adjacent to its ends with buttonholes D, so as to adapt it to be connected with the neckband of a shirt through the medium of the collar-buttons ordinarily employed.

The turned-down flap B in the preferred embodiment of my invention extends from a point adjacent to one end of the body-band A to a point adjacent to the opposite end of i said body-band A, as shown in Fig. l. rI`he said turned-down flap B is peculiar in that the upper edges of its end portions are not joined to the body-band A, and hence are adapted to be turned outwardly and for-n wardly, so as to form wings E. These wings E may be of the shape illustrated or of any other shape compatible with the purpose of my invention and may be pointed, as shown, or rounded, in the discretion of the manufacturer.

It will be apparent from the foregoing that when my novel collar is properly arranged on and connected to the neckband of a shirt the lapped ends of the body-band A will form a neat and dressy closure of the forward portion of the collar, while the wings E will render the collar novel and neat in appearance. It will also be apparent that the fold F of the wings E will offer rounded surfaces to the band of a necktie of the four-in-hand type and in that way obviate' the said band being caught and held between the ends of the turned-down Hap and the body-band A. Moreover, it will be seen that by reason of the ends of the turned-down flap being free from the body-band throughout the height of the ends when the collar is secured to the shirt the said ends may be turned outwardly to form wings and the band of the necktie may be freely passed between the body-band and turned-down iiap and drawn taut therebetween. From this it follows that the knot of a necktie of the kind mentioned may be readily tightened on my improved collar without the necessity of pulling on the tie to such an extent as to tear the buttonholes of the collar. It also follows that the knot of the tie may be placed on the lapped forward portions of the body-band A, where said knot is not engaged and worn or otherwise deteriorated by the ends of the turneddown liap B. It will further be apparent from the foregoing that the wings E may be of various sizes-that is to say, portions of the turned-down flap of various lengths may be left free from the body-band A without aecting my invention.
