23 1 @ZLM UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OSWALD S. PULLIAM, OF PIITSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO PITTSBURGH EQUIPMENT COMPANY, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYD I YANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 9, 1906.
Application filed February 26,1906. Serial No. 802,994.
' ('0 (LL/1 1071 0112, it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSWALD S. PULLIAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pitts.- burg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Body-Bolster Construction, of which the following is a specification.
' The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved body-bolster construction for cars; and to this end the present invention consists of a body-bolster construction, in the novel features of construction, and in the combination of parts, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanyin drawings, which illus trate an application 0 my invention, Figure 1 is a top plan, partly in section, of a bodybolster construction embodying my inven-- tion shown in connection with two draft-sills and a draft-rigging carrier; Fig. 2, a side elevation-al view of the body-bolster proper; Fig. 3, a detail sectional View taken on line III III of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a detail perspective view of center plate and engaging means for draft-rigging carrier and draft-sills, and Fig. 5 a detail-plan of means for engaging carrier and draft-sills made without the center-bear- Referring to the drawings, the body-bolster proper, as illustrated and as preferred, comprises a top member 1, a bottom mem-' her 2, and a vertical web 3, joining the top and bottom members. As particularly shown by Fig. 2, the bottom member is cut away at its center, as indicated by 4, and the web 3 is formed with a vertically-extending slot 5.
vDisposed centrally of the bolster I employ means adapted to be connected with the draft-sill or draft-sills 6 of a car construction forked portion 10 is provided for the purpose of supgmrting the draft-rigging carrier 7.
As shown by the drawings, each of the forked portions '9 and 10 are formed with rivet-holes, and the said draft-sills and the draftrigging carrier are attached to their re spective forked portions by rivets.
When the casting 8 is applied to the body-- bolster, thevertical member 11 of the casting fits into the slot 5 of the bolster and the forked portion 9 extends outwardly from one side of the bolster-web, while the'other forked portion projects from the opposite side of the web. Casting 8 may be attached to the bolster by meansof rivets 13, extending through the walls 9 and 10 of the forked portions, and the vertical web 3, as particularly shown by. Fig. 3', or the casting may be attached to the bolster in some other suitable manner. When the bolster and the casting are assembled, as above described, the centerbearing 12 or a portion of said center-bearing is located in the cut-away portion of the bottom member of .the bolster. Center-bearing 12 maybe formed integral with the casting 8, as shown by Fig. 4, or it may be made in a separate piece.
What I claim is 1. In a body-bolster construction for cars,
the combination with the body-bolster proper formed with openings, of a casting fitted into the openings and interlocked with the body-bolster provided with arms projecting from opposite sides of the bolster for securing the draft-sill and the draft-rigging carrier of a car.
2. In a body-bolster construction for cars, the combination with the body-b0lster proper formed with openings, of a casting fitted into the openings and formed with a center-bearing and with means for securing the draft-sill and draft-rigging carrier, said casting interlocked with the body-bolster.
3. In a body-bolster construction for cars, the combination with the body-bolster proper, of a casting interlocked with the body-bolster and formed with forked portions adapted to engage the draft-sill and draft-rigging carrier of a car.
4. In a body-bolster construction for cars, the combination with the body-bolster proper-formed with a vertical slot in its web, of means for securing the draft-sill and draftrig ing carrierof a car comprising two for ed portions and a vertical portion, said IOO from opposite sides of the web of the bolster.
portion located in the vertical slot, said castvertical portion located in the slot of the-bolprising a top member, a bottom member cut ster-web and the forked portions projecting away at its center, a web joining the top and bottom members and formed with a vertical 15 slot, and engaging means interlocked with the body-b0lster..
In testimony whereof I aflixlmy signature in presence of two subscribing'witnesses.
'OSWALD S. PULLIAM'Q 5. Ina body-bolster construction, the combination with the body-bolster formed with a vertical slot in its web, a casting formed with a center-bearing and having a j ing having engaging arms projecting from opposite sides of the web of the body-bolster.
6. In a body-bolster construction, the combination with a body-bolster proper com- Witnesses:
