This invention relates generally to railway car underframes, and `more particularly to theconstruction of the body bolster and the end portion of the center sill.
The principal object of my invention is to slot the end portion of the center sill or sills and to form an openin or openings through the central portiono the body bolster in order that the end portion of the center sill can be combined with the lbody bolster so that said center sill rojects a substantial distance beyond the body bolster, thereby forming an interlocking connection which can be easily assembled, or in the case of re-' pairs can be easily taken apart. By slotting `the end portion of the center sill, it is possible to locate the bolster a short distance in from the end of said center sill, and the projecting portion of the center sill serves as a .point of attachment for draft sills which extend to the end sill of the underframe, and which draft sills are practically continuations of the center sills.
To the above purposes, my invention con- J sists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement ofv partshereinafter more fully described and claimed. y
In the construction of the underfrarne as shown, I employ a pair of center sills, each comprising a vertically disposed' web plate 10, to the upper and lower edges of which 4 17 is a center bearing 19.`

The web plate 10 of the center sills are provided in their end' portions with longitudinally disposed slots 13, which slots are for the accommodation of the top fiange of the -body Abolster forming a part of the underfrarne.'A This body bolster is preferably cast in a single piece and comprises a verti- I callydisp'osedweb 14:, a top flange 15, and a bottom lange 16, and thus said bolster is substantially of Isbeam shape in cross section. The vertically disposed webs 140i the bolster are sometimes designated intermitted diaphragms which are providedv with openings for the passage of train pipes, etc. y The central portion of the body bolster is preferably depressed with. respectl to its ends and the central portion of the top flange 15 occupies the inner ends of the slots 18. The length of these slots is approximately twice the width of the top flange 13, so that when the body bolster is properly assembled with the center sills, the ends or' the latter project a short distance beyond the body bolster. Openings 17 are formed through the web 14 of the bolster at points on opposite sides of the center thereof, which openings accommodate the lower portions of the web plates 1 0 and the/lower pair o i" angles 11.
Formed integral with the web 14 andarranged at right angles thereto immediate adjacent thc inner edges of the openings 17 are web plates 18, which lie immediately against the vinner faces oi the webplates 10, and these parts are rigidly fixed to eachother by means of rivets 19a or like fastening devices. r

Formed integral with the bolster near its ends and on both sides thereof are outwardly projecting horizontally disposed flanges 25 which are adapted to receive nailing strips, and formed integral with the bo-ttom flange 16 adjacent to these flanges 25 are side bearing plates 26.
In assembling the parts of the underframe, the bolster is positioned on the center sills with the central portion of the top ange 15 positioned in the innerV ends of the slots 13, and the portions of the center sills beneath the slots 13 project through the openings 17. Rectangular filler 'plates 27 are now applied to the outer faces of the Web plates 10 between the edges of the vertically disposed langes of the angles 11, which filler plates extend from the front edge of the top flange 15 to the ends of the web plates 10. Positioned directly againstthese filler plates and against the end portionsof the vertically disposed flanges of the angles 11 are the inner end portions of draft sills 28 preferably channelshaped in cross section, and said vdraft sills are directly connected to the center sills by means of rivets or like fastening devices, the same passing through the filler plates and the vertically disposed webs of the angles 11. The outer ends of the draft sills 28 are attached in any suitable manner to the end sill 29 of the underframe. By depressing the central portion of the body bolster the tops of the side sills 23 fixed to the ends of said bolster occupy substantially the same horizontal plane with the top plate 12 that is attached to the center sills. By slotting the center sills to accommodate a portion of the body bolster and attaching the inner ends of the draft sills/ to the ends of the ce1 er sills, Which project beyond the body bolster a very simple, strong and rigid construe tion is produced and the parts enteringinto such construction can be easily assembled or, in the case of repairs it will` be a com i paratively easy matter to remove the draft sills, thereby permitting the body bolster to be easily and quickly remo-:ed from lh center sills. l
It Will be readily understood that minor changes in the size, formr and conslrluztion of the various parts of my improvedl underlrame, can be made and substituted for those herein shown and described, without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scopeof which is set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a car un'derframe the combination with center sills provided in their ends with slots, of a body bolster attached lo said Center sills, a portion of which body bolster occupies said slots so that parts of said center sills project entirely through and a substantial distance beyond said bolster.
2. In a car underframe, the combination with center sills provided iu their ends with slots, of a body bolster connected to said cen ter sills, so that the latter project entirely through and'extend a substantial distance beyond the bolster, said body bolster having a top liange which occupies the slots in the center sills. i
3. In a car underframe, the cbmbination with center sills provided in ltheir ends with slots, of a body bolster having openings, a, portion of which body bolster occupies the slotsin the center sills, and parts of which center'sills project entirely through and beyond the openings in the body bolster.
4. In a car underframe, the combination with center sills provided in their ends with slots, of a body bolster having openings to accommodate the parts of the center sills below the slots therein and which center sills project entirely through and extend a 'substantial distance beyond said bolster.
5. In a car underframe, the combination with center sills, of a body bolster having openings through and beyond which project `parts of the center sills, and draft sills rigidly fixed to the projecting portions of the center sills.
(3. In a car underframe, the combination with center sills, of a body bolster, which sills are slotted to receive part of the body bolster, the end portions of which sills project entirely through and beyond he body bolster and draft 'sills fixed to the extended ends of the center sills.
7'. In a car underframe, the combination with a center sill provided in its end with' la longitudinally disposed slot, of a body bolsterhaving an opening adapted to acrcommodate a portion of the center sill, and
a part of which body bolster occupies the slotin the center sill so that the slotted end of the center sill projects entirely through and beyond said body bolster.

10. ln a car underfraine, a pair of con-- nected center sills, having vertically disposed Webs in which are formed slots adapted to receive parts of a body bolster Which slots are greater in length than the Width of the bolster so that 'the ends of the center sills project entirely through and a substan tial distance beyond said body bolster.

15. ln acar underfranie, the combination' with center sills, of a body bolster, which sills are slotted to receive parts of a body bolster, the slotted ends et which sills pro-- ject entirely through and beyond the bolster, draft sills fixed to the projecting ends o'f the center sills, and means between the draft sills and thev center sills for closing the slots thereof in front of the bolster.
16. ln a car underframe, the combination with a center sill provided in its end with a longitudinally disposed slot,- of `a bodybolf ster. having an opening adapted to accommodate a portion of the slotted end ot the center sill, a partof which body bolster occupies the slot in the center sill, said. slot' being greater in length than the width of the body bolster so that the end of t-he center sill projects entirely through said bolster, and a draft sill lined to the projecting in the body end of the center sill for closing that portion of the slot in front ot' the bolster.
17. In a car underf-rame, the combination with a slotted center sill, of a body bolster provided with an opening, which sill and bolster are combined so that a portion of the body bolsterv occupies the inner portion of the slot in the center sill, a part of which center sill projects entirely through said bolster and means fixed tothe projecting ends of the center sill for closing that portion of the slot between saidprojecting portions.
18. ln combination, a pair of spaced center sills and a pair of spaced draft sills connected therewith to form extensions thereof, one pair of 'saidsills being provided with longitudinally extending slots, and the'other pairvoil said sills being arranged to cover one end of said slots, in combination with a bolster brought into assembled relation to said sills by movement longitudinally of the sills.
19. In combination a pair of spaced center sills having vertical web plates and a pair oit spaced draft sills having vertical web plates, the plates of one pair of sai-d sills being slotted and the other of said `pair of sills being connected with the websof the slotted sills at two sides of said slots, in combination with a bolster having a continuous portion spanning and projecting beyond said sills and another portion interposed between a pair of said sills.

In combination, a pair of spaced center sills and a pair of spaced draft sills connected therewith and forming cont-inuations thereof, one pair of said sills being slotted and the other ot`- said sills lapping the. slotted sills at two sides ot' said slots, in combination with a bolster having a continuous portion spanning said sills and projecting through and beyond the same, and having another portion interposed betweensaidsills:

In combination, spaced channel shaped center sills slotted longitudinally from their ends, a bolster having a continuous top portion and intermitted flanged diaphragms cooperating With lsaid sills, the top portion occupying the slots ot' the sills and the diaphragm's extending away from the sills, said bolster comprising a central portion serving as v'the sole means for connecting the diaphragms with the sills.l

In combination, channel shaped center sills slotted longitudinally from their ends, a bolster comprising a single continuous rccessed casting and a filler for said recess and having a continuous top portion and intermitted flanged diaphragms cooperating with said sills, the top portion occupying the slots of the sills'I and the diaphraglns extending away from the sills, .said bolster filler portion connecting the diaphragnis with the sills.
