Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLEN E. OSTRANDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paterson, New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bolsters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and. use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of a bolster constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the bolster, and Fig. 3 is an end view of the same.
This invention relates to body-bolsters for railway-cars; and one of the objects thereof is to provide a body-bolster which will possess the requisite rigidity and which maybe easily attached to the side sills of the car.
Other objects and advantages, as well as the novel details of construction, of this invention will be specifically described hereinafter, it being understood that changes in form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
The preferred form of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings as comprising a central vertical web 1, having a top cover member 2 and a bottom cover member 3. The top cover member is wider at its center than at the ends, the central portion extending in an approximately horizontal plane, then merging into upwardly-deflected portions, and having its opposite ends deflected downwardly short of the ends of the bolsters, as indicated at 4 and 5. The bottom cover member 3 at its center is also approximately horizontal and is deflected upwardly toward its ends, which are deflected downwardly and extend slightly beyond the web and the top cover member, said ends being provided with projecting lips 6 and 7, which are reinforced by a series of longitudinal reinforcing-ribs S and 9, respectively.

At the ends of the topso that the web 1 is interposed between them and secured by rivets which pass through the webs 1 and 12. The side sills are illustrated as comprising angles 13, having inwardly-disposed horizontal flanges,-which rest upon the lips 6 and 7, respectively, to which they are riveted. The vertical portions of the angles are riveted to the depending flanges 11 of the pressed-steel connecting devices 10, so that a rigid and convenient fastening is provided, whereby the respective ends of the bolster may be secured to the sides of the car. In this manner a convenient fastening is provided which possesses the requisite rigidity, but at the same time permits the bolster to be readily secured to the car side sills in assembling the parts and permitting the removal thereof in case of accident. The bolster is provided with arcuate side bearings 14 and 15, and the web 1 is reinforced longitudinally and intermediate the top and bottom cover members by tapered ribs 16. At the center of the bolster are transverse reinforcing-ribs 17 and 18, which are joined to the tapered ribs 16, and between said ribs 17 and 18 is a tubular web 19, providing a king-bolt opening 20.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a railway-car, the combination with side sills, of a cast bolster having a continuous lower member projecting beneath the side sills and secured thereto, the portions of said lower member which project beneath the side sills being deflected downwardly; substantially as described.
2. In a railway-car, the combination with side sills, of a cast bolster having an upper member deflected upwardly from its central portion and having its opposite ends deflected downwardly, a continuous lower member extending beneath the side sills and secured thereto, and connections between the upper member and the side sills; substantially as described.
3. In a railway-car, the combination with side sills, comprising members having inwardly-disposed flanges, of a cast bolster having a central vertical web and top and bottom members the lower member being secured to the under side of the inwardly-disposed flanges of the side sills, and fastening devices arranged in pairs and connecting the respective ends of the web and top members of the bolster to the vertical portions of the angle side sills; substantially as described.
4. A cast-steel bolster having a vertical web provided with transversely-extending reinforcing-ribs and tapered longitudinallyextending reinforcing-ribs connected therewith and top and bottom members, the bottom member extending beyond the ends of the Web and the ends of the top member being deflected downwardly; substantially as described.
5. A cast-steel bolster having a web and top and bottom members, of pressed-steel fastening devices connected to the web and to the top member of the bolster and the sides of the car, and rivets passing through the side members of the car and the bottom member of the bolster; substantially as described.
. 6. A cast-steel bolster having top and bottom members and a web connecting them,
and fastening devices for securing the ends of the bolster to the car side, said fastening devices having means for engagement with the upper member of the bolster and the web; substantially as described.
7. The combination with the side sills of a car, of a body-bolster having upper and lower members, and fastening devices for connecting the bolster to the car sides and arranged in pairs with webs back to back, parts of the webs being secured together and parts being spaced apart to receive the web of the bolster, said fastening devices also engaging the upper member of the bolster; substantially as described. r
