No. 4:44 Dawson avenue, Bellevue, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented Certain new and useful lmprovements in Underframesfor Railway-I Gars, of which the following is a specication.
ll/fy invention relates to the underframes frames that are constructed wholly or partly of metal and has for its object to overcome certain objectionable features existing in such underframes as now commonly constructed.-
ln the construction of underframes of this type, especially where the center sill is made of and-beam, either rolled or built up of commercial sections, and the draft-sills are made of cast metal, the weakest place in these elements is at the point where one or the other is intersected by the body-bolster.

'.lrhis displacement of the metal of the center sill or the draft sill of necessity weakens that particular portion of the underframe, and it is'an obJect of my invention to construct the center-sill, bolster and draft sills in a novel manner, so that they may all be secured together in such a manner, that none,`r of the said members are weakened in any respect.

Another object of my invention is to provide an underframe construction in which the draft sills are connected to the body bolstersinsuch a manner that the bolsters rigidly brace the draft beams, and constitute strong abutments to receive and trans-- `mit the draft and buqng strains and shocks. A` further object of my invention is to provide an underframe structure in which lthe draft sills are rigidly and securely attached to the body bolster in such a manner that they can readily be removed and replaced, without disturbing the bolster or removing any part of the latter.
Another object of my invention is a reduction in the number of the parts constituting my underframe, which l attain by making the draft sills in one piece, and the center bearing integral therewith.
With these and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown on the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details may be made, within the scope of the claims, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

the body bolster ofthe underframe, each lof which is provided with side bearing devices of any preferred form. The outer ends of these bolster members are provided `with flanges 6, 6 to which the side sills 7, 7 are secured. The inner ends of the webs of the bolster, z'. e., those nearest to the longitudinal center line of the car, have their web portions offset at 8, and at the point 9, where they contact with the end of the draft sill, assume an angle of about forty-five degrees, whence they continue backward as at 10 toward the longitudinal center of the car in the plane parallel to and in contact with the web of the center sill to which they are secured in any suitable manner. ylhe webs of the bolster members 5, 5 are further provided with anges 11, 11 at their lower edges to which the tension angles 4, v

The draft sills at each end of the underframe are composed of two longitudinal members 13, 13 of channel or other suitable section for the reception of the draft gear (not shown). At the end nearest to the bolster, their web members are united by a flange le, and the upper portion 15 of the center bearing member 22, which is chambered for the reception of the king-pin and to make the member as light as possible consistent with strength. The outer end faces 16, 16 of this member, nearest to the bolster are formed at an angle of about forty-tivedegrees to correspond with the angle formed by the portions 9 of the bolster with which they contact, provision being made for bolts 1'? which are passed through both members to secure lthem together. 'llhe end of the web of the draft sill is split and is of a V form at 18, to give strength and stidness to this member at this point. The ends of the draft sill member also extend in the direction of the sides of the underframe in the form of webs 19, having flanges 2O on their upper sides to which a portion of the upper flange 35 of the bolster, and the tieplate 33, are secured. Flanges 21 are also provided on the lower sides of the webs 19, which are secured to the lower flanges 34C, 34: of the bolster members., lin Fig. 2 of the drawings, the center nismo?
