To, all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD P. RUDOLPH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stenciling Devices; and I hereby declare the following to be full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertainstomake and use the same.
This invention relates to; apparatus for stenciling, and especially for stenciling addresses on boxes and other receptacles.
The object of this invention is to provide an apparatus by means of which the operation of stenciling can be rapidly performed.
My invention therefore consists in providing a frame in which is combined the .case for the stencil-plates and also forms in which to assemble the stencils, so that the whole may be carried from box to box and the stencils assembled as desired.
My invention further consists in providing a new form of stencil-plates which may be handled by the operator without his coming in contact with the inked portions thereof and also which may be perfectly alined and securely clamped together.
My invention also consists in the features of construction and combination of parts as described in the specification, pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan of my stencili'ng apparatus, showing a complete stencil assembled in the form. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 shows one of the stencil-plates in perspective. Fig. 5 is a section on line 5 5, Fig. 2.
Again referring to the drawings, 1 re resents a rectangular frame, preferably of effect metal, which is provided with handles 2, so that the frame may be readily carried. At each end of the frame and extending the full width thereof is arranged a partition 3, so as, to leave a narrow space 4 between the said partition and the end wall of the frame. At each side of the frame is arranged a partition 6, so as to form a compartment 7 between the said partition and the side wall of the frame. This compartment 7 is divided by means of partitions 8 and forms a case for holding the stencil-plates. The center of the frame that is, the space 9 inclosed between the partitions 3 and 6is open rig-ht through. from top to bottom. coil-springs. 12, To prevent displacement, the coil-springs are preferably secured to. the bottom of the supports 10 and also to the bars 13.
The pair of bars 13 constitute the form in which the stencil-plates are assembled to make a complete stencil. Each stencil-plate comprises the usual thin sheet 15, in which the character is cut, and two side pieces 16, preferably of some thicker material, to which the sheet 15 is secured in any preferred way. The side pieces 16 are provided with flanges 18, and thesaid side pieces are made of such length that when the flanges 18 rest on the bars 13 the stencil-plates will be held slightly above the surface on which the stencil is to beimprinted, so that the pressure of the brush will bring the sheets 15 in contact with the said surface. Clamps are provided for holding the complete stencil together after the plates have been assembled, and each of these clamps comprises a U-shaped body portion 20, which is provided with flanges 2 1, arranged to rest on the bars 13. On one of the said flanges 21 is formed a pair of ears 22, between which is pivotally secured a cam-shaped dog 23, by means of which the clamp can be locked to one of the bars 13.
A second form is preferably arranged so that it can be adjusted relatively to the first form, and is therefore mounted and arranged as follows: In each of the spaces 4 is mounted a member 25, which is arranged to slide freely therein. On each member 25 is mounted a pair of supports 26, preferably cylindrical in form, and in each support 26is formed a vertical slot 27 Within each of the supports26 is arranged a coil-spring 28. A pair of bars 29 are arranged to extend across the frame, and the ends of these bars 29 enter the slots 27 in the supports 26 and rest on the top of the coilsprings 28. In the bottom of the frame beneath each of the members 25 is formed a slot 30, and a bolt 31,having a head larger than said slot is passed through said slot and also through the member 25, and on the end of the bolt is arranged a thumb-nut I 32, by means of which the member 25 can be securely clamped to the bottom of the said frame.
The stencil-plates and clamps used with the lastdescribed form are of course in every respect the same as those used with the firstdescribed form.
What I claim is- 1. A stenciling apparatus comprising a frame rovided with compartments arranged along t e sides thereof so as to leave an open space in the center of said frame, bars arranged to extend across said open space in said frame, means for yieldingly supporting said bars, means for adjusting the distance betweensaid bars, U-shaped stencil-plates arranged between said bars and rovided with flanges which rest on the top 0 said bars and means for clamping said stencil-plates together.
