Description

EUNiTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY J. MARTIN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS ASSIGNOR TO THE WHITMAN dz BARNES MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF AKRON, OHIO.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 544,738, dated August 20, 1895.
Application filed May 7,1895. Serial No. 548,417. (No modal.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY J. MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Wrenches, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention has for its object the providing a wrench which, while being capable of taking nuts or bolts of a number of different sizes in fixed jaws, shall be compact and neat. It also contemplates the combination in the same instrument of both a wrench .of my improved design and a screwdriver or other useful tool.
The invention consists ofa handle to which is pivoted, intermediate of their ends, one or more revoluble bars, which have formed on them, on opposite sides of the pivot, two pairs of wrench-jaws adapted to take differen t-sized nuts, or one pair of jaws and a screwdriver or other suitable tool, there being means pro- Vided for holding the revoluble bars" in the desired position.
The drawings illustrate three embodiments of my invention.
Figure l is a plan of one form considering the wrench as lying on its flat side; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same; and Fig. 3, a sectional plan with the top plate removed. Figs. 4 and 5 are each plans of other forms of my improved wrench. r
a and b are two plates which form the handle of the wrench. Pivoted to these plates near one end thereof, by means of the bolt 0, is a revoluble bar d. This bar has each of its ends formed into a pair of wrench-jaws of different capacity. A blockt is provided between the plates a and b for the purpose of locking either end of this bar to the handle, so that the other end may be used as a wrench. This block is formed as shown, having a portion f of the proper width to fit between the pair of jaws which are nearer together, and a portion g, which is adapted to occupy the space between the pair of greater capacity. This block has also a top lug e, which pro jects through an elongated hole h in the top plate a. The block is slidable longitudinally of the plates, being guided by the sides of the hole It and the lug 'e, which latter closely fits the width of the hole. A spring t' (shown in dotted lines) is carried in a depression on the under side of the block, and bearing against the plate I) forces the block against the plate a and holdsit in whatever position it is placed. In the form shown in Figs 1, 2, and 3 there is a similar revoluble bar pivoted near the other end of the plates. One end of this bar has wrench-jaws, but the other is made into a screwdriver, as shown. The sliding blockj is, therefore, correspondingly changed, it being made of the proper width to slide between the jaws on the bar, and also having a notch la in it of a size to fit eachside of the screwdriver end 1 of the bar, and thereby lock the same in place. In the form shown in Fig. 4 a stationary plate fills the space between the plates a and b at this end of the handle, and notches m, n, and 0, to receive different-sized nuts or bolts, are cutinto the plates. In Fig. 5 a similar plate is placed between the plates at and b, but its end extends out and is formed into a screwdriver p. Wrench-jaws are also formed in this end by means of the notches 'r and 3 cut into the plates.
. In operation, when it is desired to use the locked end of the bar, the block is simply slid away from the bar by means of a pressure of the thumb upon the projecting lug e, the bar reversed, and the block slid back to grasp the other end of the bar.
The arrangement of the notches in the handle and of the revoluble bars and the tools formedon them will be varied to suit the requirements of the art in which'the wrench is intended to be used.' In place of a screwdriver any other suitable tool capable of being held by the sliding block may be used.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a wrench, in combinati0n,'a handle, a bar pivoted intermediate of its ends to the same, a pair of wrench jaws formed on this bar on one side of the pivot, a suitable tool formed on the bar on the other side of the pivot, and ablock connected with the handle and adapted to occupythe space between the wrench jaws and also adapted to hold the tool,
ICO
. to occupy the space between the other pair of said jaws, and means whereby said block may be slid into the space between the pair of jaws presented to it, substantially as described.
3. In a wrench, in combination, the plates a and b, the revoluble bar at pivoted between them, said bar having each of its ends formed into' a pair of wrench jaws, the block t slidable between said plates and having a portion f adapted to fit between one pair of said jaws and a portion g adapted to fit between the other pair, said block having a lug projecting through a hole in the plate a, and the spring t forcing the block against one of the plates, substantially as described.
