Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 2, 1906.
Application filed February 6, 1906- Serial IToi 299,718.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. BAUMAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Morton, in the county of Monroe andState of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners for Leggings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the ac companying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in fasteners for leggings; and the invention-has for its primary object to provide a fastener by which the adjoining edges of a legging can be easily and quickly connected together.
Another object of my invention is to dispense with the use of laces, straps, clamps,
and buttons heretofore used'for fastening a pair of leggings upon the limbs of a person and to provide a fastener which will firmly hold the adjoining edges of alegging together, whereby they cannot become accidentally disconnected.
A further object of this invention is to provide a novel form of legging which will not injure the footwear when being worn or any part of the garments worn by a person.
Briefly described, my invention resides in providing one edge of a legging with a metallic strip having a cleat or socket at each end, while the opposite or adjoining edge of the legging is provided with a resilient metallic strip having pointed ends which are adapted to engage in the cleats or sockets of the firstnamed strip.
The above construction will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and, referring to the drawings accompanying this application, like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a legging equipped with my improved fastener. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the male member of the fastener. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one form of the female member of the fastener with one socket and the headed rivets removed. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of a part of said female member. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the cleats or sockets detached from the female member. Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view of one end of a female member of a slightly different form; and Fig. 7 is a developed view of a legging constructed in accordance with my invention,
showing the employment of afemale member of the form shown in Fig. 6.
To. put my invention into practice, I construct my improved legging of leather, canvas, or the like flexible and durable material and cut the material substantially the shape fabric from unraveling.
The vertical edges of the legging are equipped with my improved fasteners, said fasteners consisting of a male member-2 .and a female member 3. The female member embodies a strip of material, preferably metal, which in the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings is provided with openings 4 4, one adjacent each end of the strip, and in these openings are placed headed rivets 5.5, adapted for engagement with the footwear or garments of the wearer of the legging and preventing the ends of said female member from injuring such footwear or garment. This strip 3 is also provided near each end with a pair of slots 5, which slots are adapted to receive lugs 7 carried by cleats or sockets 6 6, said lugs being adapted to be inserted in the slots 5 5 and then bent into engagement with or clenched on the rear face of the strip. The said sockets or cleats are made wider at one end than at the other, as clearly seen in Figs. 1 and 3, to conform to the tapered ends of the male member hereinafter described.
Instead of providing the headed rivets 5 in the female member the ends of said member may be bent over to engage the strip of material out of which the pocket that carries the female member is formed, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, said bent ends being engaged, as at 16. The male member 2 of the fastener is formed of a strip of metal 9, having tapering ends 10 10, which are adapted to engage in the cleats 6 6, carried by the female mem- The edges of the legging are provided with casings 11 and 12, the casing 12 being shorter than the casing 11, whereby the tapering ends 10 10 of the male member will be within the transverse edges of the legging. In the casing 11 is mounted the female member,
while in the casing 12 is mounted the male member, said casings being adapted to snugly hold the members therein.
' The lowertransverse edge of the legging is provided with a strap or stirrup 14:, having a buckle 15, said strap or stirrup being employed to engage the foot of a person and prevent the legging from slipping upwardly upon the persons limb.
In placing the legging upon a persons limb the foot is first inserted through the strap or stirrup 14, at which time the edges of the legging are connected by inserting the tapering ends 10 10 of the male member 2 in the cleats 6 6 of the female member 3, this being'accomplished by slightly bending the male member 2 in order that the tapering ends 10 10 may extend into the sockets 6 6.
To insure a positive gripping of the mem bers by the casings, I may use rivets 17 17 for securing the members within the casings 11 and 12.
From-the foregoing it will be observed that I have devised positive and reliable means for fastening a legging around a limb, the type of fastener used being easily and quickly manipulatedwhen it is desired to place a legging upon a limb or remove the same.
I do not care to confine myself to the type of legging in connection with which my improved fasteners are used, and such changes in the construction of the fasteners as are permissible by the appended claim may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a legging-fastener, the combination with a legging, casings carried by the edges of said legging, one of said casings being of the same length as the legging, and the other casing being of less length than the legging, a male fastener member, comprising a strip of metal fixed in the shorter of said casings and having tapering ends projecting beyond the ends of the casing, and a female fastening member fixed in the other of said casings and having tapering sockets to receive the taper ing ends of the male fastening member.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM W. BAUMAN.
