IMPROVEMENT 1N swINGs.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent'. and making part of the same- To all whom it may concern: l
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. SHAFFEmof Dayton, in the county of Montgomery, in the State of Ohio, have invented a new and improved Swing; and I do hereby declare thatv the yfollowing is a full and. exact thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in a new arrangement of the pedal, by pivoting the arms, which sustain the foot-piece, in a vertical position.
To enable others skilled in the art to make .and use my invention, Lwill proceed to describe its construc-v tion and operation.

-The arms B B are lpivoted at the place of suspension, in the manner shown. Near the bottom of these arms, and immediately beneath the seat H, is an axle,
extending from one arm'to the other, an d on the outer ends of this axle are pulleys, O, over which the *cordsi C G pass to the pedal F. Nearly at a right angle with the supporting-arms are the arms E E, to the forward endsl of which are pivoted the arms D D, which support -the 4treadle. The cords are attached at a point` about one foot in advance of lWhere the supporting-arms are pivote-d.
.l The operationis thus: The person seated on a swing extends the limbs, the feet resting on the pedal, which causes the swing to move forward, the backward move# ment resulting solely from the weight of the person.-
Thus a person swings himself easily, Whilst the feet move nearly horizontally.
' What I claim as inyinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The permanent arms E E, the pivoted arms D D,-
and treadle F, constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
