Description

de' aient i @fida www ROBERT 8.-- LAIRD AND WILLI-AM F. STONE, OF SANDWICH, ILLINOIS.
Laim Patent No. 83,176, dated october 2o, 186s.
IIMSPROVEMENT IN RAIN-WATER CUT-OI'IS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the lame.
To all whom'it 'may concern:
Be it known that we, ROBERT S. LAIRD andWrL- Y LIAM F. STONE, ofv Sandwich, in the county of De the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication, and in which is represented a front view of our rain-Water cut-off.
The object of our invention isto provide a cheap and effective means for separating impure from pure water, and to this end our invention consists. in hinging a section of the pipe, and providing said section With a sliding cut-off, in combination with a double outlet, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, We will now describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents a common water-spout, secured to the side of the house, B.
O designates a section or joint of pipe, of suitable length, and made a little larger than the spout A which fits inside o f the pipe C, and to which said pipe is hinged or pivoted, by means of a pivot,c.
D represents a curved slide, furnished with an opening in its centre, which is supplied with a nozzle, fitting loosely on the lower end of pipe C, and sliding back and forth, as will be described hereafter.
F represents a plate or casing, curved to correspond with the slide D, and secured in position by means of metal strips formed thereon, and bent at right angles tothe plate. This plate is formed or providedon its upper outer edges with flanges, bent so as to form grooves, for the slide D to be slid back and forth, which may be performed by means of handles d d, attached to the said slide D.
The under side of plate F is also supplied with nozzles rmy mi, which iit around holes made inthe plate F, and to which may be attached joints of pipe to direct the Water from pipe C into the propel' source.
Thus it will be seen from the foregoing arrangement, that by moving the joint O from one opening to the other in the plate F, by means of the slide D, the water descending the main pipe can be directed in the desired channel, causing it to enter the. ciste-m, or be cut off therefrom. Y
Vhat we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The combination and arrangement of the hinged pipe C, slide D, and anged plate F, provided with two nozzles, m m, all constructed, arranged, and operated for a direct lateral movement, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own, We aix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
' ROBERT S. LAIRD.
