BARREL-CARRIER Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 18, 1906.
Application filed December 13, 1905. Serial No 291,577-
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JEssE FRAVEL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Im proved Barrel-Carrier, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to package-carriers; and its object is to provide a new and improved barrel-carrier arranged for convenient and quick attachment to one or two barrels, to enable a workman to readily carry two empty barrels with the use of but one arm and hand, and to permit two workmen to carry a filled barrel with ease.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the views.
Figure 1 is an edge view, partly in section, of the improvement arranged for one workman to carry two empty barrels. Fig. 2 is a faceview of the same, and Fig. 3 is an edge view of the improvement arranged for two workmen to carry a filled barrel.
The barrel-carrier consists, essentially, of two members A and A, provided at their outer ends with sets of sidewise-extending hooks B B and B B for engaging the ends of two barrels C and C at the same time, as plainly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. The outer ends of the members A and A are also provided with sets of transversely extending hooks D D and D D for engaging the ends of a single filled barrel C it being understood thatfor this purpose two barrel-carriers are used, one on each side of the barrel, as plainly shown in Fig. 3. The members A and A are also provided near their outer ends with hand holds E and E, preferably in the form of longitudinally-ext'ending bars, as shown in Fig. 2, and the inner end of the member A is provided with eyes F F, on which are secured the ends of a rope G, extending through eyes F F formed on the inner end of the member A. A roller-handle G is mounted on the rope G in front of the member A, it being understood that the said rope forms an arm-support for engaging with the arm of the user of the barrel-carrier, as plainly illustrated in Fig. 1.
By the arrangement described the armsupport G on account of its flexibility not only connects the inner ends of the members A and A with each other, but serves to draw the members toward each other when the device is used, so as to securely hold the cor responding sets of hooks B B and B B or D D and D D in engagement with the ends of the barrels, as above explained and shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3.
When it is desired to carry'but a single filled barrel C as shown in Fig. 3, then use is made of two barrel-carriers and the transversely-extending hooks D D and D D are hooked onto the ends of the barrel, after which two workmen take hold, each with one hand, of the corresponding roller-handle G, as indicated in Fig. 3. The workmen can now readily lift the barrel C and in doing so the rope G of each barrel-carrier tends to draw the members A and A toward each other to securely hold the hooks D D and D D in firm engagement with the ends of the barrel C When it is desired to carry two empty barrels C and C by one workman, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, then use is made of a single barrel-carrier and the hooks B and B are engaged with the ends of the barrel C, while the hooks B and B are engaged with the ends of the other barrel C, so that the members A and A extend between the two barrels C and C. The 0 erator now slips one arm through the loop ormed in the rope G and then takes hold of the handhold E to lift and carry the two barrels in a very convenient manner.
' It is understood that the device may be used with either of the members A or A in top or bottom position, so that the operator can take hold with the hand of either the handhold E or the handhold E.
The barrel-carrier is preferably made of strong-wire; but this is not essential, as it a may be made of other material, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction shown in the drawings.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A barrel-carrier, comprising two members having hooks at their outer ends for engagement with the barrel ends, a handhold fixed on each member, and an arm-support adjustably connecting the members with each other.
2. A barrel-carrier, comprising two members provided with hooks and having handholds, and a flexible arm-support connecting the members with each other.
3. A barrel-carrier, comprising two members provided With hooks, and a flexible armsupport secured on one of the members and slidably engaging the other member to form an arm-loop.
4. A barrel-carrier, comprising two members, each having a set of transverse and a set of sidewise-extending hooks, and means for adjustably connecting the members with each other.
5. A barrel-carrier, comprising a pair of members having a set of transverse hooks and a set of sidewise-extending hooks, a handhold on each member, and a flexible arm-support secured at its ends to one member and extending loosely through guideprays in the other member, to form an arm- 6. A barrel-carrier, comprising a pair of members having a set of transverse hooks and a set of sidewise-extending hooks, a handhold on each member, a flexible armsupport secured at its ends to one member and extending loosely through guideways in the other member, to form an arm-loop, and a roller on the said 'loop.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
JESSE FRAVEL.
