Description

@maar @anni l LYMAN D. BURCH, OF SHE RBURNE, NEW Y ORK.
Leners Parent No. 83,130, ma 00am 2o, 186s.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOW-POIN TS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom fit ma/y conce/m Be it known that I, LYMAN D. BURCH, of Sherburne, Chenango county, New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Plow-Points; and I- do hereby declare that thefollowing'is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of said improvements, reference being had'to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, which 4represents a plan of the back side of the plowpoint, showing the' improvements.
'A A, the point.
A A", the wings thereof.
B B', the depressed part of the wings.
C, space between. A
D, D, and D, ribs or braces.
E and E, stays.
The plow-point is cast in the usual form, or it may be cast in nearly any other form, and it is -united t'o the mould-board by a lap-joint and bolts in the usual manner, corresponding parts of the mould-board filling B B and C; but I form on the back of the point,where the end of the mould-board laps on to it, a stout rib or brace, D, with branches D and D2, as seen in the drawing, for the purpose of giving strength to the point: These ribs or braces are covered by the lap of the mould-board, in which there is a cavity for that purpose.. By means of these ribs, great strength is given to the point at the place where it is most needed for the greatest strain is always at this place, while,
` by reason of the necessary cutting away of the back for the lap, it is rendered the weakest part of the point.- The braces so arranged render itthe strongest at this point. The rib D also' serves a valuable .purpose in forming the casting, as the shrinkage is much 'more equal with. it. Another advantage of the use of these ribs is, that a harder iron` may be used than can be with the old form, and consequently the point will wear much longer than where soft iron has to be used to get strength.
I also add to the ends of the wings the'stays E and E', which are ribs extending a short distance beyond the wings, on the back side thereof. These proj ecting ends will of course lap over the back side of the mouldboard when in place, and serve to keep it there, even though the bolts which keep the point to the mouldboard become loose or fall out.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim therein as new,` and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The ribs or braces D, D1, and D2, constructed and operating substantially as described.
2. The stays E and E', constructed and operating substantially as described. l
