Description

MRS IH. MOTT, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. l'
Leners 13mm No. 83,120, zaad 00am 13, 186s.
IMPROVEMENT IIN'A TABLEPCLOTH PRQTCTOR.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part oft the same.
To all whom 'it may conce/rn:
Be it known that I, Mrs. J. H. MOTT, of the city and county of Washington, in the Bistrict of Columbia, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Aprons to Protect and Save the Clothes and Table-Cloth from being Soiled by Children while taking their meals; and the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making va part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a child sitting at a table, with the apron or protector spread on the table, and secured thereto, and also to the neck of the child.
The object of my invention is to keep the clothes of children neat and tidy, and also to protect tablecloths from being soiled by children spilling their drink or food on them.
My invention consists in forming a raised edge around the larger or lower portion of an apron, made of India rubber, oil-silk or cloth, or of any substance that is impervious to liquids, and also having loops or buttons at the lower edge of the apron, whereby tape may be attached to it, and extend across and be sebured to the opposite edge, or underneath the top of the table, so that the child cannot pull the apron oii, and endanger the crockery placed upon it.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will describe it more fully, referring to the drawings, and to the letters thereon.
The apron A may be made of any desired size or shape, and of any material which may be found suitable for the purpose. In making a hein, the edge may be so 'turned up, or, by other means, a ledge, a a a, may be secured to the outside, of suicient height to prevent anything upset or spilt upon it fom iowing over the edge on to the table-cloth or table. At suitable places at the bottom, there may be secured loops b b, or buttons, on which to attach straps or tape c c, of suicient length to extend across thel table C, where they can be hitchedon to small knobs or buttons d d, placed in the edge or underneath the table-top for the purpose. When the table-cloth is spread out, place the apron A upon it, and hitch the tapes c c, and set the table in the usual manner, placing the childs dishes and food on theapron. When the child is setup to the table, Abring the outer portion of the apron up in front of the child, and button it back of childs neck. Thus it will be seen that the child cannot, by leaning back, pull the apron from the table, so that all is ser cure. When the child is to be taken away om the table, unbutton the strap e at the back of the neck, throw the ilap over on to the table, and both the table-cloth and the bosom of the Achilds clothes Will be as clean as when at first seated. .The dishes being removed, the straps or tapes c c unhitched, the apron taken up and emptied and cleaned, and everything is again in perfect order. t
Thus it will be seen that a provision is made to remedy an evil which has long prevailed.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secur by Letters Patent, is-
A. table-protecting apron, formed With raised edges a a, and attaching-straps c c and e, the whole constructed and arranged substantially as described, for the purposes specified. Y
