To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ST. CHARLES VILLE- DROUiN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jeremie, Haiti, have invented a new and useful Bottle-Stopper, of which the following is a specification.
` This invention relates to bottle-Stoppers.
The object of the invention is .to provide a bottle-stopper which shall be capable of adjustment to fit any-size bottle, demijohn, or the like in connection with which it is desired to be used and which shall combine in a practical manner all the elements necessary to secure proper sealing of a bottle or the like and its ready unsealing when desired.
With the above and other objects in view, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction and combination of parts of a bottle-stopper, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a portion of a bottle-neck, exhibiting one form of bottle-stopper combined therewith. Fig. 2 is a view in vertical transverse section through the elements shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section exhibiting a slightly-modified form of stopper. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view through the elements shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a perspective detail view of the form of closure used in connection with the form of invention shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 6 is a perspective detail view of a modified form of locking element used in connection with the form of the invention shown in Figs. 3 and 4. Figs. 7 and 8 are perspective detail views of two of the elements used in connection with the device. Fig. 9 is a detail view of the adjustingnut.
The stopper exhibited in Figs. 1 and 2 embodies a head or cap (designated generally 1) which is by preference made of sheet metal and comprises abase 2 and a pair of side members 3, arranged in parallelism and herein shown as approximately rectangular in shape, although this is not essential, as these elements may be otherwise contoured and still be within the scope of the invention. A portion of the base, near each end thereof, is struck up to form two pairs of parallel-disposed flanges 4, that define two rectangular orifices 5, spaced by a rib 6. The head or cap will be of a length somewhat greater than the cross-diameter of the neck N of the bottle or demijohn with which it is combined, as clearly shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, in order that requisite adjustments of the parts may be effected to adapt the device for use in connection with liquid-holders of different sizes.
The means for combining the head or cap with the neck of the holder comprises in part a pair of clamping members 7 and 8, that are preferably made of resilient sheet metal in order to permit them to conform readily to the neck of the holder, thus to adapt them for use in connection with necks of different diameters. The outer side of each terminal portion of each clamping member has secured to it, as by rivets 9, a metallic boss 10, each of which is provided with a square orifice 11, that registers with similar orifices in the clamping members, the said orifices being en aged by bolts 12 and 13, each having a po ygonal head 14 to engage the orifices 11 in the bosses, thumb-nuts 15 carried upon the bottle-neck. Threaded upon the bolt 12 is a sleeve 12a, having a central polygonal head 12b, straddled bthe forked ,head 16 of a bolt 17, that projects upward through one of the orifices 5 in the base of the head or cap and carries a thumb-nut 18, which is adapted to bear upon two of the flanges 4, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The remaining orifice 5 has projecting through it the upper end of a bolt 19, that carries a thumb-nut 20, that bears' upon the other pair Iof flanges 4, the lower end of the bolt 19 being rovided with a head-or eye 20', disposed belbw the under sides of the bosses on that side of the attachment and having combined with ita cam 21, carried by a lever 22, the cam being split to straddle the eye 20 and being held combined therewith by a screw or pin 23, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
The closure of the neck of the bottle used in connection with the form of the invention thus far described is shown in Fig. 5 and comprises a metallic disk 24, having a transverse channel 25, in which the base of the head or cap is adapted to fit, the under side of the closure having combined with it a removable cork or other suitable facing 26 toengage the upon the neck, after which the member 7 is brought into engagement with the bolts 12 and 13, and the nuts 15 are then positioned and seated to secure the clamping members in position. The nut 18 is then adjusted so as to. cause the closure to assume a proper position relatively to the mouth of the neck, and the nut 20 is adjusted to cause the cam to coact properly with the under side of two of the bosses. When these adjustments have been secured and the cam is positioned as shown in Fig. 2, upon the lever 22 being moved in an appropriate direction downward draft is exerted upon the bolt 19, firmly forcing the closure against the mouth of the bottle-neck and effecting positive sealing thereof. When the neck is to be uncovered, the lever 22 is moved to a position at right angles to that shown in Fig. 2, whereupon the bolt may be moved from between the two clamping members, thus to allow the head or cap to be thrown back and free the bottlemouth.
In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 3 there is a novel means employed for holding the facing 27 combined with the closure 28. To effect this result, the periphery of the closure is threaded and is engaged by a threaded clamping-ring 29, having an inturned marginal flange 30, that' bears against the facing and holds it assembled with the closure, thus allowing the facing to be changed when necessary. In additionl to this, there is a slightly-modified form of cam employed, as shown in Fig. 6, wherein the two cam members 31 are combined with a yoke 32, which is suitably secured in a lever or handle 33. Each cam carries a laterallyprojecting cam-surface 34, which is adapted to contact with the under sides of a pair of the lugs 10. The object of providing the laterally-extending cam-surfaces 34 is to eX- tend the range of usefulness of the article, as by their disposition the article can be combined with the neck of a larger holder than would be possible with the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
By using the sleeve 12a and head 12b bolt 17 can be adjusted laterally simply by turning the sleeve on bolt 12.
I claim-- A V 1. A bottle-stopper comprising a head, a bottle-neck closure having a channel to be engaged by the head, and bottle-neck-clamping members adjustably combined with the head to hold the same within the channel.
2. A bottle-stopper comprising a head,a bottle-neck closure having a channel to be engaged by the head, resilient bottle-neck- 'clamping members, adjustable means connecting the head and the clamping members, and adjustable means for holding the clamping members combined with the bottle-neck.
3. A bottle-stopper comprising a head provided with longitudinal slots and upstanding flanges, a closure having a channel to be engaged by the base of the head, resilient bottle-neck-clamping members, bolts carrying adjusting nuts, connecting the clamping members, a pair of eyebolts projecting through the slots in the head and carrying adjusting-nuts engaging the flanges thereof, the eye of one of the bolts being engaged by one of the assembling-bolts of the clamping members, and a locking-cam engaging the eye of the other bolt to coact with the clamping members to effect sealing of the bottle.
4. A bottle-stopper comprising ahead provided with longitudinal slots and upstanding fianges, a closure having a channel to be engaged by the head, eyebolts having their terminals projecting through the slots of the head and carrying thumb-nuts to engage with the flanges thereof, a pair. of bottle-neckclamping members, bolts passing through the members, a sleeve upon one of the bolts and engaged by one of said eyebolts, thumbnuts carried by the bolts and a lever carrying a cam connected with the other eyebolt and adapted to coact with the clamping members to force the closure into engagement with the neck of a bottle.
