Description
sufficiently to form W i gem ce ASAHEL C. BOYDQOF GRAFTON, MASSACHUSETTS. Letters Patent No. 83,034, dated October 13, 1868.
IMPROVED FOLDING CHAIR.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it' known that I, AsArmL'O. BOYD, of Grafton, in the countyof Worcester, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Chairs; .and I do hereby declare that the following is a fill], clear, and exact description of the construction and 1 operation of the same, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which my inventionis represented by a perspective view.
The object of this invention is to construct a simple, cheap, and light chair, which can be instantly folded .into a very small compass, for convenience in packing, transportation, 85c.
In the drawings, A A are the front legs, elongated the back-standards of the chair, and pivoted at a a to the short rear legs B B. The front and rear legs, on each side of the chair, cross each other at the pivot a, and are curved, 'as shown in the drawing, so as to make the chair neat and graceful in appearance, and cause it to stand firmly on the floor. The upper ends of the two standards A .A are united by one or more cross-piecesO D, and
their lower ends by a round, E. The upper ends of the short legs B 'B are united bya round, E, and their lower ends by another, G. H H are the sidepieces of the seat-frame, the seat itself being upholstered, as shown by the red lines. The side-pieces are hinged .tothe standards A Aby curved hinges I I, the form' and construction of which are clearly shown by the drawing. They are also connected to the short legs B B by hinged metallic bars or plates J J, made and applied as seen in the drawing. The inner side of each piece, H, is provided with a socket, K, into which, when the chair is expanded, fits a tenon, t, on the upper end of the short legs. The back of the chair may be upholstered, if desired. The form of the chair. when expanded, is clearly shown in the drawing; "When folded, the seat is turned up against the back, and the ends of the legs are brought close together, but not so close as toprevent the chair from standing alone. The closing of V the legs together throws up the seat. It requires, therefore, but a single movement to expand or fold the chair. I
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is The standards A A, B B, pivoted at a a, and pro-- vided with strengthening-rounds or cross-l ars, in combination with the pieces H H, curved hinges I I, or their equivalent, and hinged connecting-rods or plates J J, when the several parts are constructed to operate.
together in the manner and for the. purposes above described.
To the above specification of my improvement, I have signed my hand, this 4th day-of November, 1867.
' ASAHEL O. BOYD. Witnesses:
