UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS J. BRITTON, OF BRAINERD, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HENRY I. COHEN,-OF BRAINERD, MINNESOTA.
' SCRIBER- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 4, 1906.
T0 at whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, FRANCIS J. BRITTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brainerd, in the county of Crow Wing and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Soribers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to scribers used by carpenters, &c., in laying out their work, and is especially useful in hanging doors ,windows, &o., where a uniform play is desired between the movable and stationary members.
My invention will be described in detail hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side View of my improved scriber, showing the scribing edges together; Fig. 2, a similar view showing them separated in the position for operation, and Fig. 3 a top plan view.
In the drawings similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
My improved scriber is secured to a handle A and has a shank B, formed with an offset C, and a follower-plate D, having its edge ground to a cutting edge.
Secured to shank B is a bar E by means of screw F, said bar being provided with an offset G, so that it lies upon said shank B and offset C when in its normal position.
H represents a scribing or marking blade projecting from offset G.
I represents a set-screw secured in a threaded bore in blade H and bearing against plate D, the purpose of said set-screw being to set the blade H and plate D at the distance apart desired in laying off work. It will be understood that the resilience of bar E normally holds the blade and plate together.
J represents a clip secured to the top of blade H to hold a pencil K, which may be used, if desired, for marking instead of the edges of the blade H.
In using the device described above the offset 0 allows the handle A andshank B to be grasped by the operators hand in scribing down the rabbet left for door in the jamb, also in scribing the base-board in the corner of a room, &c.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a scriber, a handle, an angular shank secured to said handle, a follower-plate secured to said shank, a scribing-blade resiliently secured to said shanlgand means to adjust said blade relative to said plate, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a scriber, a handle, an angular shank secured thereto, a follower-plate on the end of said shank, an angular rod secured to said shank, a scribing-blade on the end of said rod,and a set-screw secured in said blade and bearing against said plate, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a scriber, a handle, an angular shank secured to said handle, a follower-plate on the end of said shank, an angular rod secured to said shank, a scribing-blade on the end of said rod, a pencil-holding clip secured to said blade, anda set-screw secured in said blade and bearing against said plate, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a scriber, a handle, an angular shank secured to said handle, a follower-plate eX- tending from the end of said shank, an angular rod secured to said shank and conforming to the shape thereof, a scribing-blade extending from the end of said rod and when in its normal position lying upon said followerplate, and a set-screw secured in said blade and bearing against said plate to space the blade and plate apart, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
FRANCIS J. BRITTON.
