Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERICK P. I-IOGLUND, a subjectof the King of Sweden, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah, State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mortising- Tools; and I do hereby declare the follow ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to carpenters tools and has special reference to a mortising tool adapted to make the mortises for hinge leaves, lock keeper plates and the like where shallow recesses are to be cut.
One object of the invention is to provide a novel tool for this purpose which will accurately outlay the part to be removed by cuts of the proper depth and which has provision for guiding a chisel to form the bottom or floor of the recess.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be adjusted both to position on the member which it is desired to mortise and to size so that where a number of like hinges are to be applied the mortises may all be of even size and depth.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in general of a blade carrying and guiding device of novel form and construction.
The invention further consists in certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and :Figure 1 is a plan view of the invention. Fig. 2 is a view from one side of the invention. Fig. 3 is an end view. Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal vertical section.
The device includes a pair of bars each of which is provided with a longitudinal slot 11, the two slots being opposed when the device is assembled. These slots are positioned near one end of the respective bars while between the opposite ends of said bars is a spacer 12. Between the slotted portions of the bars is a spacer 13 which is adapted for movement along said bars. Projecting laterally from the ends of the bars adjacent the spacer 12 is an arm 14 which is provided with a suitable opening to receive a screw 15, the threaded portion of the screw passmg through the bars 10 and spacer 12. By rotating this screw the arm. 14 is permitted to move away from or is drawn down toward the upper bar 10 according to the direction of such rotation. In order to hold the arm 14 firmly against the head of the screw 15 other screws 16 are provided which are threaded through the arm 14 on either side of the screw 15.
At 17 is a second lateral arm. This lateral arm is provided with an opening for a screw 18 which passes through the slots 11 and through a hole in the spacer 13. On the lower end of this screw 18 below the lower bar 10 is a plate 19 having a threaded opening through which said screw passes. By means of this arrangement the arm 17 is securely held to move with the spacer 13. On either side of the screw 18 are screws 20 corresponding to the screws 16 of the other arm. Now, if the screws 20 be adjusted to hold the arm properly spaced away from the upper bar 10 and the screw 18 be tightened the plate 19 will be forced firmly against the under side of the under bar 10 while the screws 20 will force the upper bar 10 downward, thus clamping the spacer between the two bars and securely holding the arm 17 in adjusted position. For the purpose of preventing the rotation of the plate 19 and spacer 13 both the plate and the spacer are provided with lugs which project into the adjacent slot as shown respectively at 21 and 22.
Extending up from each of the arms 14 and 17 is a flange member 23. Extending inward from one of the flange members 23 is a long top plate 24 and from the other extends a short top plate 25, the two lying in alinement. Secured to the top plate 25 is an extension plate 26 which rests on top of the plate 25 and consequently on top of the plate 24, the plate 26 being long enough to permit this action. The plate 26 is provided with spaced slots 27 and screws 28 extend through these slots and are threaded into the plate 24. By means of these screws the plates 26 and 24 may be locked in adjusted relation. Depending from each of the plates 24 and 25 and in spaced relation to the flanges 23 are guide flanges 29 and between the flanges 23 and the respective guide flanges 29 are slots 30 wherethrough pass the chisel blades 31 which form the ends of the mortise as will be hereinafter described.
At the end of each of the flanges 23 opposite to that adjacent the bars 10 there is provided an inwardly directed flange 32, these flanges being alined and vertically disposed. Spaced from these flanges and depending from the respective plates 24 and 26 are rear guide flanges 33 between which and the flanges 32 the plates 26 and 24 are slotted as at 34 for the reception of the shank portion 35 of a chisel 36 adapted to form the rear wall of the mortise. This chisel 36 is provided with a thickened head 37. This head 37, being thicker than the slot, also serves to limit the movement of the chisel 36. In order to limit the movements of the chisels 31 the flange members 23 are slotted as at 38 and through these slots pass screws 39 which are threaded into the respective chisel members. The extent of downward movement of the chisels is such that their edges project but slightly below the upper surface of the lower bar 10 under ordinary circumstances.
Carried on each of the arms 14 and 17 is a gage bar 40 provided with a slot 41 wherethrough passes a screw 42 which is threaded into the respective member 14 or 17. These gage bars, furthermore, have upturned ends 43 forming thumb pieces to assist in the adjusting.
In order to hold the device during the operation of forming the mortise the arms 14 and 17 are each provided with a nail point 44 adjacent the ends of said arms remote from the bars 10.
For use with this invention there is provided a chisel having a broad thin blade as indicated at 45 and this blade has an abruptly thickened butt 46 so positioned that when the butt is in contact with the bars 10 the edge of the chisel will be very close to the chisel 36. This blade 45 is of such thickness as to fit neatly between the bars 10, being nearly but not quite the thickness of the spacers.
In using this invention the screws 28 are loosened and then the screw 18 is loosened. This being done the arms 14 and 17 may be adjusted to or from each other so that the chisels 31 will have their edges separated a distance equal to the length of the desired mortise. The screws 18 and 28 are then tightened, the screws 28 being tightened first. Before the screw 18 is tightened the screws which adjust the arms 14 and 17 to and from the upper bar 10 are so regulated that the distance from the upper surface of the lower bar to the under edge of the flanges will be equal to the desired depth of the mortise. This having been done the gages 40 are set for the width of the mortise. The manner of setting these gages is to apply the device to the doorway in such position that the rear chisel will be on the rear intended face of the mortise. The gage holding screws are then loosened and the gages moved until they are brought in contact with a projecting portion of the doorway or other place such as the stop mold of said doorway and the screws tightened. The device is now ready for use. In cutting the mortise the chisels are all pushed back and the device placed in position and struck with a hammer until the nail points are driven firmly in the wood. The chisels 31 and 36 are then struck with the hammer, the latter being moved along until the entire length of the mortise has been cut. The chisel 45 is then introduced between the bars and driven in, being moved laterally from time to time. The last operation eflectually removes the material desired to be cut out and leaves the mortise in a smooth and finished condition. It will be obvious that the device may be changed from place to place without altering the adjustment so that the work may be done in a very rapid and expeditious manner.

There has thus been provided a simple and eificient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. In a device of the kind described, a pair of bars each provided with a longitudi nal slot, said slots being opposed, a spacer between the slotted portions, a second spacer between the respective ends of said bars, a lateral arm at the spacer provided end of said pair of bars, means to adjust said arm to or from the bars, a second lateral arm connected to the spacer between the slotted portions of said bars, means to adjust the second arm to and from said bars and secure the arm in adjusted position along said slots, a blade guide on each of said arms, an angled portion formed on each blade guide, said angled portions being alined and being each provided with a slot, said slots cooperating to form a third blade guide, overlapping plates extending inward from the first mentioned blade guldes, means to hold said plates in adjusted position, gages carried by said arms and projecting rearwardly of the arms for engagement with a portion of the article to be mortised, means to hold said gages in adjusted position on the arms, chisel blades carried in said guides, and limit stops for said blades.
2. In a device of the kind described, a chisel guide, a lateral arm at one end of said chisel guide, means to adjust said arm to or from the chisel guide, a second lateral arm, said second lateral arm being movable along said chisel guide, means to adjust the position of the second lateral arm on said guide and to adjust said second arm to or from said guide, a blade guide on each of said arms, an angled portion formed on each blade guide, said angled portions being alined and each provided with a slot, said slots cooperating to form a third blade guide, overlapping plates extending inward from the first mentioned blade guides, means to hold said plates in adjusted position, gages carried by said arms and projecting rear- 5 able longitudinally of said guide, means to secure said second arm in adjusted relation along said guide and to adjust said second arm to or from the guide, blade guides carried by said arms, gages carried by said arms, and projecting rearWardly of the arms for engagement With a portion of the article to be mortised, means to hold said gages in adjusted position on said arms, chisel blades carried in said guides, and limit stops for said blades.

In a device of the kind described, a chisel guide, a lateral arm at one end of said chisel guide, means to adjust said arm to or from the guide, a second lateral arm movable longitudinally of said guide, means to secure said second arm in adjusted relation along said guide and to adjust said second arm to or from the guide, blade guides carried by said arms, and chisel blades carried in said guides.
