Be it known that 1, CHARLES WV. INGLE- DUE, citizen of the United States, residing at Lima, in the county of Allen and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Box- Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fasteners for shipping-boxes and like devices such as employed forshipping shucked oysters, clams, and other kinds of shellfish.
The object of the invention is to provide a fastener which will, permit the box to be tightly closed and which will reclude opening of the package or box wit out certainty of detection.
With the above and other objects in view, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists of the novel construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings is shown the preferred form of the invention.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a view in vertical transverse section through a ship ping -box having my improved fastener thereon. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the cover-fasteners, and Fig. 3 is a reduced plan view of the box and showing the fastener thereon.
The package or body 1 may be an ordinary pail and constructed of any suitable material adapted for the purpose for which the article is to be used. The body is provided with an ordinary cover 2, that is held assembled therewith by a hinge 3, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, the object of which is not so much to permit the-cover to be swung relatively to the body as to insure that the cover will be returned with the package when the latter is reshipped. The package or body is provided with a bail 3 of any preferred construction.
The center of the cover is provided with an opening through which projects a metallic holder 4:, which is preferably made of some non-oxidizable metal, such as galvanized iron, and is provided with an outturned marginal flange 5, that is designed to bear upon the outer side of the cover, and thus support the holder against dropping into the body or of becoming disconnected from the cover. It
within the orifice of the cover, and in order to prevent escape of liquids and. also to combine the holder positively with the cover there is a seal 6 provided, preferably of some highly-adhesive liquid-proof material, which is disposed at the point of juncture of the holder and the inner side of the cover, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The holder is provided with an ordinary cover 7 to seal its mouth. The object of the holder is to contain a suitable refrigerant, such as ice, which will keep the contents of the body in perfect condition while in transit.
The present invention is adapted to be used in connection with a package or box such as above described, and consists of a novel form of cover locking and sealing device which shall be positive in securing the objects sought. Any number of these de vices may be employed, two in this instance being shown, as these will be sufficient to effect proper sealing of the cover relatively to the body. As each of these devices is a counterpart of the other in all particulars, a description of one will serve for both. The locking and sealing device embodies in part an ear 8, which is provided with orifices 9 to receive screws 10, by which it is secured to the side of the body. The ear is furnished with an outstanding lug 11, provided with a threaded orifice to receive the threaded shank of an eyebolt 12, the eye 13 of which is engaged by a loop or eye 14, carried by a lever 15. As' shown in Fig. 2, the lever is provided adjacent to the eye 14 with a fulcrum 15 and thence to its free terminal is gradually tapered vertically, the object of this arrangement being to permit the lever to be flexed, for a purpose that will appear later on. The arm of the lever is trapezoidal in cross-section and carries a lever-looking slide 16, which is provided with a channel corre sponding in shape to the cross-section of the lever and is held from disconnection therewith by a stud or pin 17, disposed near the free end of the lever. The other member of the locking device comprises a plate 18, which is provided with orifices 19 to receive screws for positioning the plate upon the cover and with a seat 20 to be engaged by the fulcrum 15. The plate carries two spaced keepers 21, which are somewhat greater in length than one-half of the length is intended that the holder should fit snugly 1 of the plate and have their under sides 22 inclined in order that when engaged by the slide 16 downward pressure will be exerted upon the lever, thereby forcing the cover upon the mouth of the body and effecting the sealing referred to.
In the use of the shipping box or package the cover is removed and the oysters or the like are placed within the body, after which the cover is replaced, the holder filled with crushed ice, and closed by the cover 7. The levers are then turned to the position shown in Fig. land the slides 16 forced down under the keepers 21, which by reason of theinclined faces 22 will eXert a downward pressure upon the free end of the levers, and thus cause the fulcrums to force the cover tightly against the mouthof the body. When the slides have been properly adjusted, a sealingwire 23 is inserted between the crotches 24, formed between the under sides of the keepers and the upper sides of the slides, and afterward a suitable seal 25 is combined with the wire in any preferred manner, thus rendering it impossible to release the levers without destroying the seal.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that although the improvements herein defined are simple in character they will be effective for securing the objects sought and may be applied to ordinary package vessels already in use without requiring any other change in their structural arrangement than the provision of an orifice in the cover to accommodate the holder.
I claim 1. The combination with a body and a cover, of an ear carried by the body, an eyebolt adjustably combined with the ear, a lever engaging the eyebolt and provided with a fulcrum, a slide mounted upon the lever, and a plate carried by the cover and having wedge-keepers and a seat to be engaged respectively by the slide and the fulcrum.
2. The combination with a body and a cover, of an ear carried by the body and having a lug provided with a threaded orifice, a threaded eyebolt engaging the orifice, a lever having a linked engagement with the eyebolt and provided with a fulcrum, a slide mounted upon the lever and a plate carried by the cover and having wedge-keepers and a seat vided with a lug having a threaded orifice, a
threaded eyebolt engaging the lug, a longitudinally-tapered lever having a linked engagement with the eyebolt and provided with a fulcrum, a slide mounted upon the lever, and
with a pair of spaced wedge-keepers between which the lever is adapted to be disposed, and with a seat, the keepers and the seat being engaged respectively by the slide and by the fulcrum.
4. The combination with a body and a cover, of an ear carried by the body, an eyebolt adjustably combined with the ear, a flexible lever carried by the eyebolt and provided with a fulcrum, a slide mounted upon the lever, and a plate carried by the cover and having undercut keepers and a seat to be engaged respectively by the slide and the fulcrum.
5. The combination with a body and a cover, of an ear carried by the body, an eyebolt adjustably combined with the ear, a longitudinally-t'apered lever carried by the eyebolt and' provided with a fulcrum, a slide mounted upon the lever, and a plate carried by the cover and having undercut spaced keepers, between which the lever is adapted to be disposed, and a seat, the keepers and the seat being engaged respectively by the slide and the fulcrum.
