Description

N 329,951. PATENTED SEPT. 4, 1906.
A J. L. DAWES.
ILLUMINATBD SIGN.
APPLICATION FILED BEP'LZQ, 1905.
'ollq-Lja INVEHTOR JOHN L. DAWES,OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
LLUMlNATEU $EGNH Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. a, 19cc.
Application filed September 29,1905. Serial llo. 280,565-
To all whom it may concern): Be it known that 1, JOHN L. DAWES, of Pittsburg, Allegheny county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Illuminated Sign, of which thefollowing is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this Specification, in which- Figure 1 is a partial front elevation showing one form of my improved sign. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same; and Figs. 3 and 4 are viewssimilar to Figs. 1 and 2, respectivcly, showing another form of the invention.
My invention relates to double -faced illuminated SIC/11S, and is designed to provide a cheap and efficient structure of this character which will present an attractive appearance, will give easy access to the lamps, and may be cheaply made and sold.
in carrying out my invention 1 provide a central longitudinal support, which extends through the intermediate part of the sign as whole and forms the base thereof. This preferably consists of a board 2', having holes ll thercthrough in registry with the suc- 0 letters of the signs. The lamps 3, which l. have sh wn as electric lamps, are preferably mounted in these slots or holes in the central board. The electric wires are preferably placed in a longitudinal side recess 4, extending beneath the holes of the lamps, these wires being preferably protected by a strip 5, secured so as to cover the 0 ening and be preferably flush with the rest of the board or center support.
On each side of the sign and encircling each hole in the center board is a series of frames 6. These frames are preferably made of sheet metal, with flanges secured in any suitable manner to the base-board, their iter portions containing the glasssignplates 7, on which the letter is painted or otherwise formed.
In the form of Figs. 1 and 2 the outer board of each sheet-metal frame is provided with a swinging rim or door portion 8, and the glass sign-plate forming the face of the door portion is held within this rim bymalleable lugs bent down over the glass on the inside orin any other suitable manner. These lugs can be readily bent back to permit the removal of the sign-plate and the insertion ofa different one. The rim portions are hinged at 9 andmay be held by latches or hasps 10. In the form of Figs. 3 and 4 the top portion of each frame is slotted, and the side portions are formed as guides for the glass sign-plate 11, which may slide in and out, as indicated in these figures. The boxes on both sides of the center board are similarly arranged, The advantages of my invention result from the cheapness and simplicity of the structure and the attractive appearance presented. Easyaccess is also given .to the lamps and connected wires, and the baseboard appears as a frame for the whole sign. Such variations may be made in the form and arran ement of the base-board or center support, the frames, 6120., as fall within the scope of the appended claims without do? parting from my invention.
l claim+- 1,
1. In an illuminated si a central board or fiat support havin iiiilss out therein,
the holes, supply-wires therefor extending" alon the board or support, sign-boxes carriedliy the board or support and arranged 111 pairs upon opposite sides thereof, and removable si ns in the said boxes, and forming the faces '0 ereof; substantially as described.
3. An illuminated sign havin a central longitudinal board or'support wit holes cut therein, lamps mounted in the holes, sheet metal frames in airs carried by the support surrounding the else at opposite sides, and swinging rims secured to tne frames and in closing a lass plate for the sign material;
substantia ly as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set n1 hand.
y e I JOHN L. DAWES.
