UNITED STATES SIMON LUBARSKY, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
ILLUMINATED DISPLAYING DEVICE.
Application filed December 27, 1926. Serial No. 157,378.
This invention relates to improvements in displaying devices and has particular reference to means for illuminating indicia or other characters which it is desired to display.
The principal object of this invention is to produce a device which will accommodate a series of indicia bearing members which iudicia bearing members may be changed from time to time inaccordance with the desires of the user.
Another object is to produce a device of this character which is simple to manufacture and one which may be economically assembled.
A further object is to produce a device of this character which is neat in appearance.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a front plan view of my improved device,
Figure 2 is a rear view of the indicia hearing plate,
Figure 3 is a cross-section taken on the line 33 of Figure 1,
Figure 4 is a cross-section taken on the line 4:& of Figure 1,
Figure 5 is a fragmentary detail View showing the holding channel,
Figure 6 is a perspective View showing on of the indicia plates,
Figure 7 is a cross-sectional view showing two of the indicia plates in interlocked position,
Figure 8 is a fragmentary detail view showing the manner of locking the indicia plates in the channel member, and
Figure 9 is a-modified form of my device wherein the same illumination is employed for the two sides of the device.
There are many places where illuminated signs might be employed. but have been omitted up to the present time due to their expense. I have therefore devised a simple displaying device wherein the indicia or characters are stamped out in such a manner that the cost of production is very slight and therefore, I have produced a device which is very economical to manufacture and one which may be employed wherever it desired to show illuminated figures or letters.
In the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a plate which is adapted to be attached to a housing 6. This housing maytake any form desired, and forms no part of my invention.
The plate 5 has a window 7 formed therein to the upper and lower edge of which are attached parallel channel members Sand 9. These channel. members are cut as shown in Figures 1 and 5, so that they may be bent as will be hereinafter described.
These channel members are adapted to receive indicia plates 11, which indicia plates are all alike and therefore but one will be described. This plate comprises indicia stamped therefrom as shown at 12. Up-- 7% turned ends 13 and 14 are each provided with a tab as shown at -16 and 17, respectively, which tabs are bent over and upon a glass plate 18 (see Figure 7). These tabs hold the glass plate 18 in position, which plate serves to soften the light passing through the indicia opening in the plate.
The sides of the plates are bent as shown at 19 and 21, respectively. It is to be noted that the side 19 is merely an upstanding lip, while the side 21 is bent upon itself so as to prov izde a bend best illustrated in Figures 6 and With this construction it is possible to lock several plates together as shown in Figure 7, and to then insert them into the channels 8 and 9. After being inserted in the channels, the lugs '22 are bent down as shown in Figure 8, which lugs serve to lock the indicia plate against lateral movement with respect to the channels. 2
When a sufiicient number of plates have been locked in the channels to cover the window 7, the plate 5 as a whole may be attached to the housing 6 after which illumination, such as designated by the bulbs 23 and 24:, may be turned on from any convenient source of supply.
In the form shown in Figure 9, the construction is identical with the exception that 1 an additional plate .26 is inserted on the opposite side of the housing, which plate may or may not bear indicia, depending upon the desires of the user.
While I have broadly set forth the device as adaptable for use in illuminating indicia, nevertheless, the preferred use of the invention is for illuminating house numbers or the like. l/Vhen applied to this use, the housing 6 can readily be inserted in the wall or any desired portion of the house, and thereafter the desired numerals can be vpositioned in the front plate.
It will be evident from this construction that any necessary indieia can be readily purchased for displaying the street number of a house.
It is to be further noted that the form shown in Figure 9 cannot only be utilized for illuminating the house number, but also the glass plate willserve to "allow the illumination to pass through the rear of the box so that this rear illumination can be utilized if desired.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes relative to neeegwa the n aterial, shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention orthe scope of the subjoined claim. 7
Havingthus described my invention, I claim In a displaying device of the character described, a plate having a window formed therein, parallel channel members positioned on said plate, a plurality of indicia bearing plates, said plates having 'indicia out therefrom and having upturned ends, said upturned ends being provided with tabs for the purpose of holding a glass plate against said indicia bearing plate, means for interlocking several of said plates for introduction into said channels, and means carried on said channels for locking said plates to said channel, said last mentioned means comprising lugs struck from the vertical edges of said channel members.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature,
