Description

Nov. 17, 1942. R. '-r. vow PALMENBERG' ,30 1
FITTING FOR USE IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF DIS1 LAY DEVICE Filed Oct. 25, 1940 Patented Nov. 17, 1942 FITTING FOR USE IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF DISPLAY DEVICES Raymond '1. von Palmenberg, New York, N. Y. Application October 25, 1940, Serial No. 362,768
7 Claims.
This invention relates to a novel fitting for use in the construction of a display device, more particularly for the display in stores of fiat articles, as books, magazines, dress patterns, cards, articles afiixed to cards, etc.
Generally speaking, the novel fitting comprises a body portion and a portion for engagement in a suitable aperture in a store counter, or sham, for the support of the fitting. The body portion of the fitting is provided with a stop at its lower end for engagement with the lower edge portion of a partition member, as a sheet of glass. A second stop extends from the body at a point above the first stop, desirably from the upper end of the body, for engagement with an adjacent partition member, in a slanting position, at points adjacent to its end edges and at a distance from its lower edge.
The display device will, as will appear in detail hereinafter, be made up, upon a counter or sham, through the use of a plurality of fittings and partition members and will present one or a plurality of bins defined by partition members in slanting relationship with respect to the surface of the counter, or sham, on which they are supported by the fittings.
Having now indicated in a general way the nature and purpose of this invention, I will proceed to a detailed description of preferred embodiments thereof with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fitting em bodying this invention.
Figure 1A is a perspective view of a modification of the fitting shown in Figure 1.
' Figure 2 is a sectional view of a display device including fittings embodying this invention.
Figure 2A is a fragmentary sectional View showing a modified form of display device including the fitting shown in Figure 1A.
Figure 3 is a sectional view of the subject of Figure 2! taken at right angles thereto.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of an element of the display device shown in Figures 1 and 2.
Referring to Figure 1, whichillustrates a fitting according to this invention, and which may be made of any suitable material, as, for example, metal, 2 indicates the body of the fitting, the lower end portion 3 of which extends, desirably,
at about a right angle to its main portion. The
lower end portion 3 is slit from one edge and the stop 4 turned up. The stop 4 extends upwardly for a distance and its upper end portion extends at an angle as shown at 5. Secured, about centrally of the portion 3 of the body, is a pin member 6. The pin member may be secured to the portion 3 in any suitable manner, as by passing one of its ends through a hole in the flange and riveting the end over.
At the upper end of the body 2 a second stop 1 is formed by bending an extension of a portion of the body over, desirably at a right angle. The second stop 1 could be formed by slitting the body from its upper end and bending over, or by slitting to define a tongue within the body and bending out.
The fitting as described is made in two forms with the stops 4 facing in opposite directions to enable the support of partition members at their opposite ends, as shown in Figure 2.
Referring now to Figure 1A, in which is shown a modification of the fitting shown in Figure 1, the body 2' is extended to provide a sham or counter engaging portion 6', in lieu of the pin 6 of the fitting shown in Figure 1. A lower stop 4' is provided by slitting the body and bending out the tongue so formed and an upper stop I is formed as in the structure illustrated in Figure 1.
Referring now to Figures 2 and 3, the top of a counter or sham indicated at 8 is provided with spaced holes adjacent its edges into which fit the pin portions 6 of a plurality of the fittings of the type shown in Figure 1. Where the fitting is of the type shown in Figure 1A, spaced slots in the sides of the sham are provided for the reception of the sham engaging portion 6, as indicated in Figure 2A, from an inspection of which it will be noted that the slots in the sham 8 are of a depth less than the counter engaging portion 6' in order that with the fitting in position the lower stop 4' would be spaced above the lower surface of the sham. Sheets of glass 9, 9' are supported adjacent their opposite ends by means of stops 4 of pairs of oppositely placed fittings, opposite fittings having their stops 4 facing oppositely, and by stops 1 of adjacent pairs of oppositely spaced fittings, as will be clear from an inspection of Figures 2 and 3.
As will be appreciated, fittings of the form shown in Figure 1A will function to support the sheets of glass from the stops 4' and 1' in a manner similar to the form shown in Figure 1.
As will now be observed, the sheets of glass 9, 9' will be supported in a slanting relation to the surface of the sham 8 and will form bins in which various articles may be supported in a slanted position.
Where desired bottom closures for the several bins may be provided by members III, which may comprise sheets of veniently be 9' by means bers H, H, by rivets l2, tition members 9, 9' and with me shown in Figure 3.
It will be appreciated that it is glass, and which may consecured to the partition members 9, of a pair of channel section memsecured in right angular relation and engaged respectively with parmbers It), as
not int ended that this invention shall be limited in scope by the above detailed bodiments, since it will be obvious description of preferred emthat various modification in details may be made withinthe scope of the invention as appended hereto.
What I claim and desire Patent is:
