EUGENE CARRAINE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
ILLUMINATED SIGN.
An'nlication led August 31, 1921. Serial No. 497,122.
To 'all whom t may concern.' f
Be it known that I, EUGENE CARMINE,
a citizen Vof the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Illuminated Signs,
of which the following is a specification.
One object of my invention is to provide a cheap knockdown sign, that can be illuminated. A further object of the invention is to make the sign of ca-rdboard'or like material, which can be readily suspended for display or placed on any convenient support. A still further object of the 'invention is to make a sign in which either or both faces can be used as signs.
In the accompanying drawingg Fig. l is a perspective face View of my improved sign.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the rear of the sign.
Fig. 3 is a plan view.
F Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4 4,
Fig. 5 is a View of the sign showing the parts flat and ready for packing, and
Fig. 6 is a view showing lettering on the curved portion of the sign.
1 is the front or body portion of the sign, in the present instance made of heavy cardboard. The edges. may be ornamented in any manner desired. The letters are open as shown and closed with tissue paper or other material so that a light within the sign will illuminate the letters or ornamental characters at the face of the Sign.
2 is the back of the sign also made of card board in the present instance. The
back is hinged to the front at 3 by a muslin strip and at the opposite side from the hinge is a locking strip 4 also secured to the front section 1 by a muslin strip 5. Projecting from the locking strip are keys 6 which enter slots 7 in the back section. The back section is of greater width than the space 'between the hinge 3 and the locking strip L1 so that it is bent in the form of a semicircle as shown in Fig. 3, to provide space for an illuminating device.
At the bottom of the sign is a bottom section 8 having three projecting undercut keys 9 which engage notches 10 in the lower edge of the back section 2. The lower edge of the back section is preferably on a level with the lower edge of the front section, so that the sign will stand on any suitable Support.
The top of the sign in enclosed by two card board sections 11 and 12, both hinged to the front section by strips of muslin or other material. The top section 11 has projecting undercut keys 13 which extend into notches 14 in the upper edge of the back section, and the section l2 also has undercut keys 15 which enter the same notches.
The top section 11 has a large hole 16 therein for the passage of an electric light bulb and the cover, section l2, is Slotted at 17, the slot ending in a small hole for the electric cord to which the bulb is attached, so that when the two sections are in place the electric light bulb is held in a Xed po- Sition within the sign. By raising the cover section 12 the bulb can be withdrawn from the sign if desired without detaching the top section 11.
In some instances the curved portion may have the cut out letters or figures as shown in Fig. 5, and may be shaped to represent different articles of merchandise, and the fiat portion will then Jform the back of the sign, and in some instances both the front and back of the sign may be ornamented and lettered where a double sign is desired.
While I have described my improved sign as made of card board it will be understood that it may be made of tin or other material if found desirable. I claim- 1. The combination in a sign, of a fiat body portion; a Hexible curved section connected thereto at one side and having slots at the opposite side and a series of notches at the upper and lower edges; and top and bottom sections hinged to the body portion having keys extending into the notches of the curved section and detachably secured to the curved section; and a series of keys on the body portion engaging said slots in the curved section.
2. The combination in an illuminated sign, of a body portion forming the face section having a slot therein extending to of the sign and having open letters or ohara point above the center of the hole in the aeters therein; a curved back section hinged cover section for holding the cord to Whichl 10 at one side to the body portion and detachthe elec-tric light bulb is attached, said sec- 5 ably secured to the opposite side; a top seotions being pivoted to the body portion and tion having a. large hole therein for the pasdetachably secured to the curved portion. sage of an electric light bulb;" anda cover EUGENE CARRAINE.
