Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 7, 1921.
Application filed January 17, 1919. Serial No. 271,724.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that T, NATHAN WARsHAw, a citizen of the Republic of Russia, and a resident of New York, in the county. of New York and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Easels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates more particularly to a class of devices adapted to be used in conjunction with boxes.
My invention has for its object primarily to provide a device or easel designed to be employed in association with a box and other containers and preferably with the lid of the box whereby the body of the box may be positioned on an incline so that the contents of the box will be readily observed by persons when displayed for sale on the counters of stores and elsewhere, and which is of a'form to allow a suitable sign to be shown in conjunction with the merchandise if desired as well as being of a form adapt ed to be fixed to the lid of the box in order to prevent misplacement and loss by acci dental separation from the lid. The invention resides mainly in the provision of a plate composed preferably of two foldable members one being adapted to be secured within the lid of a box so that the second member when unfolded will protrude angularly from the lid, and foldable between the members is a support adapted to be adjusted by the second member when unfolded whereby the body of the box will be arranged and held in an inclined position when the body is disposed within the lid.
Another object of the invention is to provide for the second member of the plate being disposed so that a sign or suitable advertising matter may be displayed thereon above the body of the box; and a further object of the invention is to provide an easel of a very simple and efficient construction which may be made in any desired size and shape.
With these and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the ac companying drawing forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and will then be pointed out in the claim at the end of the description.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a fragmentary view showing in perspective one form of easel embodying my invention as used in con unction with a box.
F 1g. 2 is an enlarged detail sectional view taken through the easel and the lid of the box and which shows the body of the box bemg supported on an incline in the lid by the easel. V
Fig. 3 is a section taken through the lid of the box and through the easel when folded together within the lid, and
Flg. 4 is a reduced inverted plan of the blank from which the easel is formed.
The devlce or easel has a plate 10 which may be made in any suitable size of any desired pllable material, though the plate is preferably made of card board of a substantially rectangular shape. in proximity to one of its ends is transversely bent or creased, as at 11, to provide two foldable' members 12 and 13 so that the member 13 may be guided toward and from the member to angular positions. As shown, the member 12 is in the form of a. strip for serving as a retainer, and in practice this striplike member or retainer is This plate glued, or otherwise cemented or fastened to the underside of the top 14 of the lid 15 adapted to be removably fitted on the body 16 of a box 17. The retainer or member 12 of the plate is also mounted on the box lid adjacent to one of its ends so that when the member 13 is swung to a position rights 'angularly with respect to the member 12 the member 13 will protrude rightangularly with relation to the adjacent end of the box lid. The member 13 is preferably of a length somewhat longer than the depth of the body16 of the box so that the free end portion of this member will extend some distance above the body of the box when the body is supported on the easel, as will be hereinafter more fully explained. On the upper part of the member 13 may be a sign, as 18, provided by printing, painting or otherwise inscribing on the member one or more inscriptions to indicate and ad vertise the character of the merchandise contained in the box.
Foldable between the members 12 and 13 of the plate 10 is a support, as 19, adapted to hold the body of this box, and this support may be of any suitable form, though the support'is preferably provided by making two spaced parallel slits, as 20 and 21, in 110 suitable distances in the adjoining parts of the members 12 and 13 of the pliable plate 10, and by transversely creasing or bending, the strip, as 22, provided between the sllts 20 and 21 on a line corresponding to the crease 11 of the plate 10 the strip 22 may be disposed in the fashion of an inverted l..- shaped bracket adapted to be folded between the members 12 and 13 of the plate 10 when these members are disposed in lapping arrangement. The L-shaped bracket, or strip 22 will when the member 13 is swung to a rightangular position relative to the member 12 assume the character of a shelf projecting inwardly between the members of the plate 10 toward the second end of the box lid, and this bracket, or support 22 may be of any suitable size.
In practice one of the easels is fixed in the lid of the box containing merchandise, as hereinbefore explained, and the easel is folded together so as not to interfere with the contents of the body of the box when the lid is applied on the body. In order to use the easel the lid is removed from the body of the box and the lid is arranged upside down on a counter, show case or elsewhere. The body of the box with its contents is then placed within the upturned lid following the swinging of the member 13 to protrude rightangularly upward from the lid, and by resting one end of the bottom of the body of the box on the support or bracket 22, as shown, the body of the box will be held on an inclined position for displaying its contents, while the sign 18 on the member 13 of the easel will be exhibited for observation above the body of the box and above its contents. Thus a very simple and efficient easel is provided for use in combination with a box or other container for fications may be made therein without de-' parting from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, therefore, I reserve to myself the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope thereof.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 'lhe combination with a box having a body with a removable lid, of an easel con sisting of a pliable plate creased transversely to provide two members one foldable upon the other and one of the members being held to the bottom interiorly of the box body so that the other member may be swung upwardly and downwardly outward of the box body, said pliable plate having in its central part crosswise of its crease spaced parallel slits to provide a strip which is also creased transversely intermediate its ends for being folded together between the members of the plate when said members are folded toward each other as well as assuming the shape substantially of an inverted l. to provide a support protruding from the members of the plate when one of the members is swung outwardly of the box body.
This specification signed and witnessed this 16th day of January, A. D. 1919.
