FRAME FOR'ADVERTISINGGARDS. APPALlc/lou FILED June 11,4929.

' Guang! UNITED STATES PATENT oFFlcE.
RICHARD A. JOHNSTON, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO BARRON G. COLLIER, INCORPORATED, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
FRAME Fon ADVERTISING-CARDS.
Application led June 11,
To all whom t may Gomera:
Be it known that I, RICHARD JOHNSTON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at 98 Morningside Ave., New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Frames for Advertising-Cards, of which the following is a specification. n
My invention relates to a frame for holding advertising cards adapted to be placed in the ends of trolley7 or other passenger cars, more particularly between the end doors and sides of the cars.
The object of the invention is to producea frame in which one or a plurality of cards may be conveniently inserted and having a slidable top attached to the main section of the frame adapted to be-opened to permit the insertion of a cardwithout the necessity of bending or twisting same and thereafter to be closed to securely hold it in position.
yOther and further objects of the invention will be apparent as the description is proceeded with.V
Referring to the drawing wherein a pre ferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated:
Figure 1 is a face view of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1;
.Fig 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4--4 of F ig. 1.
eferring more specifically to the drawings, 5 denotes a preferably metallic board or frame having its side and bottom edges 6 inwardly turned or rolled to form a beadingr or border and also to provide side grooves 7 for slidably receiving the end edges of the advertising cards (not shown). The openings 8 in the top of the frame through which the cards may be readily inserted without bending, is normally closed by means of the slidable closure member 9 having straight side edges 10 adapted to slide in the upper portions of the grooves 7, the top edge v1l of the closure member 9 being rolled inwardly to simulate the apearance of the side and bottom edges of t e frame 5. It is not necessary to completely remove the closure member to enable the user to insert the cards, but merely to slide the former` outwardly or upwardly a slight distance as side grooves 7 are suiliciently wide to accommodate both closure member and. cards. This Speccation of Letters Patent. Patented June 2.8, 1921,'
1920. Serial No. 388,355.
sliding movement of the closure member is limited by means of lugs 12, preferably punched from the closure member, operating in slots 13 formed in the upper portion of the frame 5. In order to completely remove the closure member, or when inserting the same in place, the lugs 12 must of course be forced out of the slots 13.
One or more cross pieces 14 preferably of sheet metal doubled in the direction of their length and bent to form top and bottom side grooves 15, have their end edges 16 slidably mounted in the side grooves 7 of the frame 5. The cross pieces serve as partitions between-the different cards, which are adapted to be slidably carried on the face of the frame or board 5 with their'top and bottom edges firmly seated in the respective grooves 15. Any number of cross pieces or partitions may be used according to the number of cards to be employed, or 4they may be eliminated where a single card is displayed. These partitions may be easily removed by slightly raising the closure member 9 and sliding the former out through end of grooves 7.
Any suitable means may be employed toV attach the frame or board 5 to the car, such as screws or the like (not shown) adapted to pass through openings 16.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is: y
A street car advertising frame comprising a rectangular sheet having its bottom end and side edges rolled inwardly to form a border and also to provide side grooves, the top extremities of said rolled'side edges being beveled, said frame being provided with spaced elongated vertical slots, a closure member comprising a flat rectangular member slidable within said side grooves and corresponding in width to the width of the frame member buty of relatively less length, said closure member formed with punched out portions and having its top edge rolled inwardly to simulate the beading on said sheet and its corners beveled to lit fiush with the beveled corners of said side edges, said punched out portions adapted to engage in said slots for limiting thev outward movement of said closure member, said .side grooves adapted to slidably receive advertising cards when said closure member has been moved to its outward limit.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature
