Description

PATENTED AUG. 28. 1906.
J. M. BOYLE.
HAT FASTENER.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 4, 1905.
INVENTOH THE .vcmus psrsnspa, WASHINGTON, u. c.
UNITED sTAT-ns PATENT OFFICE.
HAT-FASTENER- Specification. of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 4, 1905. Serial No. 285,868.
To all whom it vnay concern:
Be it known that I, JOHANNA M. BOYLE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Hat- Fastener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a fastener to be applied to hats for the purpose of securely holding them in position without the use of detachable fastenings, which are always liable to get out of place and even to be lost, the principal objects of the invention being to provide a fastening device which will be mounted on the hat at all times and which can be readily manipulated to secure the hat firmly in position.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specifica tion, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a view illustrating the manner in which the invention is applied in use. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the under side of a hat, showing my improved fastener applied thereto. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the fastener, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the fastener removed from the hat.
I preferably employ two fasteners, one upon each side of the hat, each consisting of a plate (1, having perforations a, through which it can be fastened to the hat by means of thread or any other fastening device. This plate is provided with an upturned guard a along the lower edge, and to this guard is pivoted a comb b. This comb is prov ded with teeth I), curving upwardly toward the plate. The guard c constitutes a stop for preventing the comb from turning beyond a certain point in a downward direction. As above stated, I preferably use two of these fasteners, one upon each side of the hat, and locate them at a point slightly at the rear of the center, so that when the hat is ready to be applied the combs will assume a substan tially horizontal position, so that they can enter the hair of the wearer. They are then forced upwardly by the application of pres sure from below. This pressure can conveniently be applied by the thumbs. When the combs are forced upwardly in this manner about their pivots, the hat is necessarily forced down onto the head, and it will be readily observed that as the combs project toward each other any force tending to detach the hat'from the head will be counteracted by either one comb or the other and also both combs will tend to apply force to hold the hat on from opposite directions. In order to remove the hat, it is advisable to slightly Patented Au 28, 1906.
lift it while simultaneously drawing the combs downward.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A hat-fastener, comprising a plate secured to the inside of a hat at a point near the brim thereof and provided with an upwardlyturned guard along its lower edge, and a comb pivotally mounted on the plate adjacent to said guard, said comb being provided with upwardly and inwardly curved teeth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses;
J OI-IANNA M. BOYLE.
