' FASTENBB. APrLIoATIoN HLBD Pmms, 1910.

RAFFAELE IDONE, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
HAT-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 5, 1910.
Application led February 23, 1910. Serial No. 545,287'.v
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that l, RAFFAELE lDoNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hat fasteners for use in connection with ladies hats, the primary object of the invention being to provide a generally improved fastener of this class for use as a substitute for the ordinary hat-pin thereby eliminating the disadvantages arising from the use of the latter.
A further object is to provide a fastener which will more effectively hold the hat upon the head of the wearer in any position to which it may be adjusted without the ordinary hat-pin, the improved device being adapted to be readily secured within the lower edge of the crown of any ordinary hat, and to engage the hair in a manner similar to a sidecomb when placed in position.
lVith the above mentioned and other ends in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in one of its embodiments in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring to the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure l, is a view of a hat equipped with the improved fastener illustrating the manner of placing the same upon the head of the wearer. Fig. 2, a perspective View of the improved fastener detached from the hat. Fig. 3, a plan view of the same with the pivotally mounted anchor-fangs or teeth in their folded position.
Similar numerals of reference designate like parts throughout all the figures of the drawings.
The improved hat fastener comprises a perforated flexible band or main body portion l, carrying a plurality of depending tapered anchor-fangs or teeth 2, substantially spaced from each other as shown.
The liexible band and anchor-fangs may be formed of suitable material, such as rubber, Celluloid or the like, and is adapted to be secured within and to extend flush with the lower edge of the crown of the hat 3, as illustrated in Fig. l, of the drawings. The flexible hand is preferably provided with a series of openings or perforations la, by means of which the band may be sewed or otherwise secured within the lower edge of the hat crown, and the depending anchorfangs or teeth are preferably formed of flexible material and tapered and arranged substantially as shown. The anchor-fangs or teeth are adapted to be pressed downwardly into the hair of the wearer and extend about the head when the hat is placed in position in the manner indicated in Fig. l, of the drawings.
As a means for concealing the anchorfangs or teeth without the crown of the hat when the latter is removed, the anchor-fangs or teeth are pivotally mounted in a plurality of inwardly extending pivot-lugs 4, formed integral therewith and arranged along the median portion of the inner periphery of the band or main body portion 1, as illustrated in Figs. Q, and 3, of the drawings. When thus mounted, the anchor-fangs or teeth are adapted to fold inwardly within the crown of the hat when not in use as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings and are mounted in such a manner that when brought into their operative position as illustrated in Fig. 2, the base portions 2a, will be stopped and braced against the lower edge 1b, of the band or main body portion whereby to prevent any further outward movement of the anchor-fangs or teeth when placed on the head of the wearer.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood.
Having thus described an embodiment of my invention, what l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,-
In combination with a hat, a flexible band secured within and extending flush with the lower edge of the crown of said hat, said band being provided with a plurality of pivot-ings arranged along the median portion of its inner periphery, and a plurality of inwardly folldable anchor-fangsk pivotally mounted in Said pivot-lugs and braced against the lower edge of said band whereby to prevent outward movement when placed on the head of the wearer.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
RAFFAELE IDON'E.
