Description
UNITED' STATES' THOMAS J. GORMAN,
PATENT onirica.
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CLOSURE FOR ENVELOPS IAND THE LIKE- Specification of lLetters .Il?ate11t.y
vPatented. ,Aug.'14=, 190,6.
Application filed November 30,1904. Serial N0. 234,869.
.To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. GORMAN, a citizen ofthe United States of America, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, New
York city, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful 'Improvement in lClosures for Envelops and the Like, of which venvelops by unskilled hands, so that the envelops and closure attachments `may be kept in stock separately and furnished as required.
Another Objectis to facilitate constructing such closure attachments of tough paper or similar 'iiexible material in one piece by re- `inforcingrthe material Where strength is especially required7 and thus to obviate using relatively heavy and expensive-material.
Other objects are to fasten down the reinvforcing-folds by a pair of eyelets serving also as parts of the fastening means and to provide the closure with a tension fastener conveniently and eifectively arranged.
A sheet of drawings accompanies this speci- ;fication as part thereof.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a capshaped closure attachment, illustrating .the invention. Fig. 2 is a face view of the blank 'from which such closure attachment ismade tachments,'illustrating modifications of the invention.
Likeletters andnumb ers refer to like parts in all the figures.
"In lcarrying this invention into effect blanks are madeofthe form-represented by Fig.I 2, the same being cut `flat from suitable tough paper or from cloth, silk, satin, tor other suitable flexible `material toy correspond with that of which'the envelop'ismade, andi the closure v attachment is.- completedi-byfolding the blank along three lines, (represented, respectively, by dotted-lines-at 1, 2,;and3 in Fig. 2,) so as to provide the attachment with a reinforced straight edge a and a-pair of .-reinforced oblique edges b and c, .whichibecome outer edges when the attachmentisin place on a receptacle. The material is also provided with creases 4, 5, and al0ng1linesfrepresented by dotted lines correspondingly numbered-in Fig. 2, seas-to outline itsifront or body portion d, which is of.- oblong rectangular shape.
Thev other portions of the closure-formedzby said blank are anattaching-portion @,adjoining said body portion d alongthe edgeformed lby saidicrease 4, the same beingone of=its longer edges, and a pair ofllaterallysfolding flaps f and g, adjoining the ends ofsaid body portion d at saidicreases. 5andy6.
A pair of eyelets h and '1l-serve vto fasten down the .folds which `form said reinforced edges a, b, ande, as shown iniFig. 3, andalso serve conveniently; and i preferably to attach the disks and 7c lof a tensionifastenen the string Z of .Whichis attached .to .one of the eyelets in customaryimanner.
The attaching portion e is secured `tto the front or back ofthe envelop (represented at Bin Fig. 4) by gum carried by said` attaching portion, asindicatedin Fig. 3,.;orrbya central eyelet or like fastening, -the .only yrequisites being that-.theA closure attachment A shall;be inseparably `secured to the .envelop :B Afand thatlthe crease 4betweenatheattachingporl Ition e and sbody vportion d. shall fbe )located at and g are foldedrtoward eachothersoaslto .restore the closure attachmenttothe shape represented in .Fig. f1, -Which iis `ithe shape the closure attachment A isifoldedroverfthe .open endofthe envelop fB, and :the `aps f IOO in which it is handled as an article ofgmannf facture and in Whichit isadaptedltoand in use serves toincloseithe open; endacl ofthe envelop, tolocate the fastening devicejh-lgata sufficient Adistance from .the -open .end x .for
The laterally-folding flaps f and g may beV 'thus pro ortioned-'for other forms of fasten- 'y ers, "as il ustrated by Figs. 5 and 6, in which, respectively, a metallic fastener is representnection'with a pair of eyelets h and t, as before described.
ed at m and a fastening-string at n, in con- -In the-species represented by Fig. 7 the laterally-folding flaps f andvg are elongated, so
as to overlap each other and to bring the pair of eyelets 'h and i into line With each other, so
f that a central T-shaped metallic fastener o or y the like mayrextendthrough both flaps, as shown in the figure.
Having thus described said improvement, I claim as my invention and desirel to patent under. this specification- 1. A cap-shaped closure attachment, for
'an open-ended envelop or like receptacle,
.lar flexible Amaterial and comprising an obmade in one 'piece from tough paper or similong rectangular body portion, an attaching lportion adjoining one of the longer edges of said body portion and adapted to be attached to the receptacle atthe open end of the latter, a pair of laterally-folding flaps adjoining-the ends of said body portion and having oblique .outer edges, a reinforced straight edge common to said body-portion and said flaps, and means for connecting said flaps with each other, substantially in line with said reinforced straight edge, to fasten the closure.
2. Av cap-shaped closure attachment, for an open-ended envelop or like receptacle, made in one piece from tough paper or simiiv lar flexible material and comprising an oblong rectangular body portion, an attaching portion adjoining one of the longer edges of -said body portion and adapted to beattached to thereceptacle atl the open end of the latter, a pair of laterally-folding flaps adjoining the ends of said body portion and having oblique outer edges, a straight edge common to said body portion and said flaps reinforced by doubling the material upon itself, and means for connecting said flaps with each other substantially in line with said reinforced straight edge to fasten the closure.
" .35. A cap-shaped closure attachment, for rfan" open-ended envelop or like receptacle,
made in one piece from tough paper or similar vflexible material and comprising an oblong rectangular body portion, an attaching portion adjoining vone of the longer edges of said body portion and adapted-to be attached to the receptacle. at the open end of the latter, a pair ofy laterally-folding flaps adjoining the ends of said body portion and having 'oblique outerv edges reinforced by doubling the material upon itself, a similarlyreinforced straight edge common to said body portion and said flaps, and means for connecting said aps With each other comprising eyelets which serve also to fasten down the folds of said reinforced edges.
4. vA cap-shaped closure attachment, for an open-ended envelop or like receptacle,
