To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JAsoN H. GREEN- United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Receptacles, of which the fo lowing is a specification. The object of my present invention is to produce a light and inexpensive package.

The invention is illustrated in the form of package usually denominated a pail or bucket, but is equally applicable to other forms, such as those denominated tubs, &c.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of such a ail; Fig.2, a central vertical sectional view of the same; Fig. 3, a top or plan view thereof on an enlarged scale, portions being broken away to better show the construction; and Figs. 4 and 5, detail sectional views at the points indicated by the dotted lines 4 4 and 5 5, respectively, construction at said points.

My improved package is constructed from a suitable fabric, the best fabric for the purpose with which I am acquainted being an 1 artificial board formed from straw, wood, or 30 other pulp. These boards may either be plain or corrugated. For certain classes of packages intended for packing and shipping glass or other breakable articles they are preferably corrugated, this, as is well known, forming, in effect, a cushion construction. Such corrugations also stiffen the side, enabling it to resist heavier pressure or weight.

The wall 21 of the pail shown in the drawings is formed from one or more sheets of fabric out to the appropriate size and shape,

the edges of which are brought together and united to each other in any appropriate way,

as by stapling, stitching, cementing, or the like, the means of securing the same shown being ordinary wire staples 22.

it rests upon the floor or upon other articles, I prefer to provide a metal hoop 26 around the out r side. Said hoop1 may be secured thereto y rivets or any ot er desired means.

In order to get the greatest strength with aminimumof size and weight,1I prefer to form a bead in the chime of the structure,

including the flange on the bottom, the lower edge of the side wall, and this external hoop,

as is best shown in Fig. 5.

As the side wall of this receptacle, when formed of the material indicated, is in itself somewhat frail, so that it is incapable of re sisting much external pressure, I provide it near the top with a strengthenlng-hoop. This hoop 31 I have shown as formed from stiff wire, and I form an internal groove within the side wall near the top, within which said wire hoop is placed. is best shown in Fig. 4. Said hoop is secured in position in the groove by any sultable means, as by the wire staples 32.

As a shipping-package this pail or other receptacle is to be provided with a cover 35. Said cover may be of the same material as (and in most cases preferably is) of wood. It is secured to the body of the package In the following manner: A number. of strips of thin flexible metal 36 are bent around the hoop 31, one end being preferably brought'to the top of the wall 21 and bent out over 1t and down along thus securing it quite strongly to sald side Wall. The other end, after the cover is placed on the receptacle, is bent in over the top of said cover and there secured 'by, means of a nail or tack 37. This forms a very cheap and convenient method of fastening on the .cover, and such'fastening is easily disconnected when the cover is to be removed.

The pail, as shown, is preferably provided with a handle. I have shown tlns as In the form of a bail 41, which engages with the ears 42, which are secured to the side wall of the just below the hoo 31. 1

Having thus ful y described my said Invention, what I claim cure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, in a receptacle, of a circular side wall of comparatively fragile material having an interior groove near' ts upper end formed by'pressmg the material receptacle by rivets or the like, generally as new, anddesire to se' or it may be p 9 the outside for a short distance, 1

doubled around said hoop and having one end passed upward and outward and adapted to be secured to the upper side of said cover.

2. The combination, in a receptacle, of a circular side wall, a strengthening-hoop within the wall and below but near the upper end, a cover, and fastening-clips passing around the hoop at a middle point with one end passin'g over the edge of the cylindrical side wall and the other end up over the edge of the cover.

3. The combination, in a receptacle, of a circular side wall, a suitable bottom, a hoop secured within the side wall near the upper end, a cover and flexible clips bent around the hoop at a point intermediate the ends, one end of each clip being carried thence up wardly and out over the upper edge of the side wall and the other end carried upwardly and out over the edge of the cover and secured thereto.
