Description

FREDERICK WITTRAM, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
Letters'latent No. 82,778, dated October 6, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTONS. I
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK WITTBAM, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented a new and improved Button or Stud; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings to be sufiioient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvement without further invention or experiment.
My invention relates to an improvement in buttons or studs for fastening garments, or for ornamental purposes, and has forits object the construction of a button orstud which shall'he more convenient in its application, give greater security in its fastenings, and be less liable to destroy the fabric by its use, and, finally, by its peculiar construction, will require amuch smaller button-hole than"o;ther fastenings for similar purposes. 7
To more fully explain my invention, reference is bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, of which 1 Figure 1 is an enlarged view of my button or stud.
Figure 2, an enlarged side view.
Figure 3, a perspective view of an ordinary-sized button or stud of my construction.
Similar letters of reference in each of the figures indicate like parts. i
I construct my button or stud of two plates or disks, A and B,-joined together by a stem, 0, in the usual manner, the particular shape or contour of these plates or disks, and also the substance from which they may be made, being immaterial; variation of shape, substance, and size being as admissible as in the common and ordinary-constructed buttons. 7
Out of the plate or disk A, I cut a section, say, about one-quarter of its entire area, then secure the section or plate D to the disk or plate A by a hinge, E. v I On the reverse or inner side of the plate or disk A, a. spring, F, is provided, which is of convenient form, and bears against the sectional plate D,-which closes the opening in the disk or plate A when not being inserted in the button-hole. I I i I The edge of the sectional plate D, and the correspondingedge of the disk or plate A in connection therewith, may be bevelled so that a close joint will be made.
When it is desired to fasten and" link together the parts of a garment, &c., the operation is performedas follows:
The movable section in the disk or plate A is depressed or opened, the edge or point of the disk, at a, is
inserted in the button-hole, and the stud is then turned toworm itself in, as it were, through the hole, which is done upon the completion of the revolution of the stud or button. The movable section D being then'releasell,
the spring F operates to reclose it, the operation being repeated for each hole through which'the stud or button may be required to pass.
What I claim as nevi, and desire to secure by Letters'Patent, is-
1. A button or stud, having an opening in its fastening-disk or plate, closed by a movable segment or piece, substantially as shown and described.
2. In combination therewith, a closing or retaining-spring, substantially as set forth.
