SAGE, acitiough of Westmont, in the county of Cambria and State ofPennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car- `Stakes; 'and I do hereby declarev the following to be a full, clear, and exactfdescription of the invention, such as will enable' ,others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i
. My invention relates to railway-cars, and more particularly to stakes or posts ,for strengthening thesides thereof, and it relates also to flanged metal bars for forming such stakes. v Y
It has for its object` tor-provide aA troughshaped metal car-stake with inclined sides, having an integral enlargement along their adjoining portions and flan es along their free edges to furnish means or securing the stake in position, whereby an economical distribution of the metal is effected.

In the drawings, 1 designates one of the transoms or cross-sills forming a part of the underframe upon which the floor-plate 2 is laid and secured in position. Secured to each of the transoms is the connection angle or bracket 3, and to the floor-plates and transoms is secured the angle 4, whichbrackets and angle are attached t the web 5 of the side plate-girder. The flange-angles 6 and 7 `of the plate-girder are secured, res ectively, to the top and bottom of the web-p ate, and between their outwardly-extendin flanges are located a plurality of my improve side stakes, as 8. The .stakes are secured to the plategirder web and incidentally to the. flange-an-` y gles 6 and 7, the angle 4 and the' connectionangle 3 in the usual manner serving to strengthen the whole structure.
The stake is preferably made substantially l V-shaped in cross-section, as herein shown, in order that there may vbe no projecting edges or cornersfor obstructions to catch upon and that it ma better resist any lateral pressure thatv may e placed upon it.v The sides 9 of j the stake are connected by a rounded apex portion 10, and'they are provided with flanges 11 along their free edges, formin a base portion b which the stake is secure in position. In or er that the apex portion, which in service is subjected to the maximum stress due to pressure on the car sides, may be properly proportioned relative to the base portion, it is provided with an'integral enlar ement or thickening, whereby an economica distribution of the metal isefected. were formed from metal of a uniform thickness my construction thereby eecting a material saving in the cost thereof. My stake is easily made from a stock-bar which may be rolled in long lengths by the ordinary process of rolling metal and the cost of its production thereby chea e`ned.
It will rea ily be seen that my invention is not necessarily limited to a stake which is 'substantially V-shaped in cross-section, for a variety of other trough-shaped sections have practically an equal eiciency. If found desirable, the stake may also be formed of a plurality of convolutions instead of a single one without departing from the spirit of my invention. It is not the desire, therefore, to limit this application to the speciiic embodiment of the invention shown and described herein, but to have it construed as broadly as is commensurate with the generic character of the invention. l
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, .is-
1. A trough-shaped metal car-stake having a side provided With a flange along its free l edge and a thickened integral portion along the edge opposite thereto.
2. A trough-shaped metal car-stake having anged sides and an integral thickening 3o along the junction of said sides.
3. A trough-shaped metal car-stake having flanged sides which are united by an integral thickening ofthe metal.
