Be it known that l, WALT-En P. Moreen a. citizen of the United States, rcsiding'et Chicago, in the county of Cool; and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Vertically(lorrugeted Sheet-Metal Car Ends of which the following as e specification,
The invention relates to the construction of railway cars, more particularly to corrugeted sheet metal end structures for reilwary cars, and one oiithe principal objects of the invention is to provide a vertically corrugated car end in which the corrugations are formed of smart cross sectional area. at points above the lloor of the our and structure, thereby giving the end its greatest strength to resist the thrusts and pressures of the cargo, for example, at the place where strength is particularly required.

The invention is illustrated as einhodied in a sheet motel car end for gondola cars. The same principles of construction might be applied to end structures for different types of cars.

Referring to the drawing, the under frame of the oer is indicated at 10, ll is theflooring a d 12 the side walls. 13 represents the side stokes. The end of the oer, in the embodiment of the invention herein shown, consists preferably of a single sheet of steel 14 formed with e plurality of vertical corrugetions these corrugations are deepest and wides, at points shove the floor of the car but below the horizontal center line of the end. The lower edge of the end sheet lt is provided with means forming horizontal stiftoning and attaching flange. For example the lower edge of the sheet may he flanged out, as indicated at 22, and riveted or otherwise secured, as at 23, to the under frame of the oer. At the upper edge of the'sheet is arranged e reinforcing member B lpreferehly an angle bar the vertical leg of'which is riveted at 25 to the end sheet. The angle her is provided preferably with angular er:- tensions or wings 26 secured to the corner posts 21.

I claim:
1. A. sheet metal cor end structure comprising an end sheet formed with vertical corrugations, the cross sectional areas of which are greatest at points between the horizontal center line of the end end the floor and which taper in width and depth toward their extremities.
2. A sheet metal oer end structure comprising an end sheet formed with vertical corrugations terminating within the edges of the sheet, the cross sectional areas of which are greatest at points between the h provide a trsnsverse strip of motel 16 which 1s riveted to the corrugations All horizontal center line of the end and the L'tloor and which taper in width and depth to Ward their extremities, and means providing a horizontal attaching and rigidifying flange at the lower edge of 'the sheet adapted to be secured to the under frame of the car.
3. A sheet metal car end structure comprising an end sheet fornied with vertical corrugations terminating within the edges of the sheet, the cross sectional areas of which are greatest at points between the horizontal center line of the end and the door and which taper in width and depth toward their extremities, the lower edge of the sheet being bent over to provide a horizontally disposed flange adapted to be at tached to the under frame of the car.

A sheet metal car end structure c0mprising an end sheet formed with vertical corrugations, the cross sectional areas of which are greatest at points between the horizontal center line of the end and the floor and which taper in width. and depth toward their (XllPlI-lltlOH and means proriding" a horizontal rigidiiiving flange at the upper edge of said sheet adapted to transmit stresses from said corrugations to the side wall of the car.
