Be it known that I, NATHANIEL S. REEDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at No. 5318 East End Boulevard, Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Car Construction, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to railway cars, and has for its object to provide an improved upper framing for box cars, that can be made entirely of metal, which will be structurally simple, light and strong, which can be manufactured at low cost, and which will also be very compact, so that the car will have the maximum inside dimensions as compared with its outside dimensions.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel side plate construction which extends from end to end of the car and which will reduce the number of boards which form the side sheathing of the car. I
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel connection between the side and end plates of the car.
In the practice of my invention, I contemplate the use of a suitable underframe, such as is used in standard practice, having the usual center and side sills, bolsters and crossbearers, end sills, etc, combined with the construction of my invention to attain the aforementioned objects.
The invention is illustrated, in a preferred embodiment, in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 illustrates a side elevation of a portion of a boX car constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view of the same, the left hand half of the view.being taken on the line 2'2 of Fig. 1 and the right hand half being taken on the line 2-2* of Fig. 1 Fig. 3 is an enlarged elevational view of portions of the side of the car with the roof removed; Fig. 4 is an enlarged elevational view of'a portion of the end of the car with the roof removed, and Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 3.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, in which like reference characters refer to like parts in the several figures of the drawings, it will be seen that the. underframe consists of center sills 1, side sills 2, bolsters 3, crossbearers 4 and end sills 5, which may be of any preferred construction.
6 indicates the vertical side posts of the car and 7 the diagonal braces. These posts and braces may be of any desired form, but as shown in the drawings are preferably of 2 form. 8 indicates the corner posts which are preferably of angle form, having their legs 9, extending in a direction longitudinally of the car and their legs 10 extending at right angles thereto. All of these posts and braces are secured to the underframe by rivets or'any other suitable means. To
these posts and braces are secured the sheathing boards 11 by bolts or other suitable means.
12 indicates the side plates, each of which comprise an angular member having its leg 13 preferably extending inwardly toward the longitudinal center line of the car and its leg 14 extending downwardly. To the leg 11 of the side plate 12, plates 15, 15 are secured, each of which extends from the door opening to the end of the car, and is secured to the side, end and diagonal posts. These plates 15, 15 strengthen the side plate throughout its entire length, and also provide convenient means for the attachment of the upper boards of the sheathing 11.
16 indicates the end plate of the car, which is preferably of 2 form for the greater part of its length and which may be of greater depth at its central portion than at its ends. The top flange 17 of this end plate extends inwardly toward the transverse centerline of the car and is preferably continuous from end to end of theplate. The bottom flange 19 extends outwardly and away from the transverse centerline of the car and terminates short of either end of the plate so as to permit the vertical portion 20 of the end plate to contact with and be secured to the leg 10 of the end post 8. It will be seen from the foregoing description that the corner posts 8 form strong and rigid connections between the side and end plates of the car.
21 indicates the end posts which may be of 2 form, to which the end sheathing of the car may be attached. The bottom portions of these posts are secured to the underframe while their top portions are connected to flange 19 of the end plate 16 by angular members 22.
At intervals throughout the length of the car, carlines 23 are provided which are preferably of channel form in cross section, each having a vertical Web 24:, a top flange 25 and a bottom flange 26, which flanges are of greater length than the Web 24, and which are bent downwardly to form end flanges 27, that are adapted to be secured to the flanges 14 of the side plates. The bottom flange 26 of each of these carlines is adapted to rest on the flanges 13 of the side plates, while the upper flange 25 forms a seat for the ridge pole 28 and the purlines 29, which ridge pole and purlines support the roof 30.
The invention is not limited to the exact construction shown in the drawings or described in the specification, for What I claim is:
1. A car Wall having a door opening, a side plate, a strengthening plate on either side of said opening secured to said side plate, posts ,secured to said strengthening plate and sheathing'secured to said posts and strengthening plates.
2. In a railway car, the combination with a side plate, of a strengthening member secured to said side plate and depending downwardly therefrom, an underframe, posts and braces secured to said underframe and
