To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. Kmsm., J r., a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Altoona, Blair county, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Cars, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to improvements in cars and more particularly to improvements in the construction of parts of railway freight cars. y

shown and described in my Patent No. 809,921. The center sillI is made up of two I beams or channel beams 10, one only of which is shown in Fig. 7, which I beams are spaced apart and extend continuously from one end of the car to the other and are fastened together at the top and bottom by cover plates 11, thereby forming a box girder extending through the center of the car. Cross bearers 12 are riveted at intervals to the webs of the channel plates 10 and extend transversely of the car supporting a pair of angle plates 13 and 14 at their outer ends, said angle plates being arranged back to back and riveted to the cross bearers 12. rlfhe bracing members 15 are also provided near the ends of the under-frameV and support and brace the end 16 of the car.
The horizontal flanges of the angle plates 13 and 14 are'on alevel with each other and together form the side sill which extends the length of the car at each side and supports the sheathing and inner wooden lining wall 17 of the car. rlhe flange 18 of the angle bar 13 extends inwardly toward the center sill and supports the outer edge of the Hooring 19 of the car. The outer bar 14 is made in the form of a channel, one liange 2O of which fits against the vertical liange 21 of the inner angle bar 13 and the other flange 22 forming the outer edge of the car body and being shorter and thicker than the inner liange 20. The web 23 of the sillmernber 14 forms a horizontal supporting base to which the side sheathing of the car may be riveted.
The side sheathing of the car comprises a series of pressed steel plates, shown in detail in Figs. 4 and 6. Each plate com rises a fiat portion 24 and a hollow vertica post or rib 25 pressed into the plate at one vertical edge. Right angle anges 26 and 27 are formed along the top and bottom edges of the fiat portions 24 of the plates and extend from one end of the plateto within a short distance of the hollow rib 25. As is clearly illustrated in Fig. 6 the ends of the fiat portions 24 of the plates overlap the hollow portions of the nbs 25 and are secured to opposite sides thereof by the rivets 28 and 29, the other liange 30 being formed be ond the post to receive the rivets. lit be y posts and terminates short of the bottom 19,
leaving a space 201 around the side of. the car, openings in the lining bemg provlde for ventilatlon purposes.
The anges 26 at the top edges of the lates 24 are riveted to the under side of the orizontal ianges 32 of the angles 33 which have vertically extending flanges 34 for supporting the roof.
As shown in Fig. 7, the roof embodies certain features of the roof shown and described in my Patent No.` 961,301 but .1s adapted to the type of side plates used 1n this new construction. Carlines 35 are distributed at intervals along the length of the car, as shown in Patent 961,301 andY have roof plates 36 secured thereto. The carlines 35 and roof plates 36 have bent downward portions 37 and 38 at their outer ends which are spaced from the vertical flange 34 of the roof supporting angle by a spacer 39 and are riveted to the vertical' iange 34. The spacing strips 39 are not continuous, Ventilating spaces being left on each side of the securing means, as is set forth in Patent No. 961,301.
The end construction of the car differs slightly from the side construction. Two pressed steel plates 40 are riveted to the side plates near the corners 41 and extend inwardly having hollow ribs or posts 42 integral with their inner ends and offset slightly asindicated at 43.
A plate 44 overlaps both of the posts 42 at the inner ends of the plates 40 and is placed between the offset-s 43 .so the end of the car will be even or flush, the plates 40, 40 and 44together constituting the end of a car with the posts 42, 42 on the interior of the end. As shown in Fig. 4, the side plate adjacent the corner and the end plate adjaf cent the corner may be pressed from a single sheet', with the hollow posts on the interior at their ends. By curving the same to fit the cornerof the car, the riveting may be eliminated. As shown in Figs. 9, 10 and 11, the plates provided with the offset posts 'may be provided with upper and lower flanges 45 to vfasten the same to the end sills and roof supporting end angle iron 46. As shown in Fig.r 9, the roof plate 47 has a vertically bent portion at its end whereby it is riveted to the vertical supporting ange of the end ang1e46.
The side door opening 48 is closed by a sliding door comprising the plates 49 and 50 provided with 'offset hollow ribs 51 and a lowerplate 52, the upper end of which overlaps the hollow lpart of the lower rib 51 and which carries at its lower end an angle member 53 having a part 54 which ts 1nwardly around the flange 22 on the outer sill member 14. Al latch device 50 is provided to lock the door in closed position. At the lateral edges of the lates 49, 50 and 52 are riveted vertical rein orcing bars 55 and 56. At the upper and lower ends of the d bars 55 and 56 are riveted hook shaped plates 57, the hooked ends of which it over the outer depending edges 22 of the side sills to hold the door in place and guide the same as it is moved from open to closed position and vice versa. The vertical plates 55 have an inwardly extending part 58, which, with the angle plate 59 riveted at the opposite side of the door opening, serves to limit the movement of the door to closed position and overlap the meeting edges of the door and door opening. Two upright channel plates 60 at opposite sides of the door are each riveted to an inwardly extending ange 61 of one of the sheathing plates 24 and are braced by suitable angle plates 62 and 63 riveted on .the outer side of the web of the channel 60 and the iange 61. The channel members 60 have flanges 64 on the inner side and on the outer side shorter anges 65 against which abut the inner sides of the plates constituting the door, the anges 65 projectin the same distance out from the side wall o? the car as the anges 22.
While I have shown and described the structure of the car in detail I wish it to b'e understood that various changes are possible and the invention isnot intended to be limited except as Arequired by the appended claims.
I claim- 1z A railway car body having an end cons1st1ng of a pair of plates bent intermediate their ends to provide portions at right angles to one another to form the corners of the car at one end, said plates having integral vertical hollow ribs therein at opposite sides of the center of the end to form hollow/reinforcing posts, the ribs in said plates formlng corresponding grooves therein opening outwardly, .and a plate united to the outerA sldes of sa1d pair of plates and'covering the grooves formed by said ribs.
