To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB H. WVEIsBRoD, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, and being a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Car Wall Construction, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and to use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the preferred form of the invention, though it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, as it is obvious that various modifications thereof will occur to persons skilled in the art.

Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but reatly enlarged with parts of the side wall roken away intermediate the top and bottom. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view of a portion of the parts shown in Fig. 3, but further enlarged to better illustrate the connections between the vertical postsand the sheathing plates employed. Fig. 7 is a detailed elevational view of one of the sheathing plates, and Fig. 8 is an end, or'edge, elevational view of'said plate.
The object of this invention is to simplify .the construction of waterproof walls for box cars and it comprises parts of simple design which may be easily assembled for forming a rigid and substantial wall structure, with outer metallic framing and with plates and wood lining.

Referring to the drawings in which is illustrated the preferred'details of construc tion, the-numeral 1 indicates the side posts 2 the sheathing plates and 3" the wood lining; floor structure and roof structure of any suitable design, but which, for convenience of illustration, are shown in connection with a floor structure, comprising Z-shaped side connecting member 4, disposed with outwardly projecting flange and vertically disposed web upstanding from said flange, and
all of which may be applied to awith inwardly projecting flange at the upper edge of said web, supporting a side nailing strip 4? to which the flooring 4 is secured;
and a side plate comprising a Z-section as 5 disposed with a horizontal web, with upstanding flan'ge 6 along the inner edge of said web, and with depending flange as 7 along the outer edge of said web. The usual wood nailing strip 8, isfixedjtlo the outer surface of the upstanding flange 6 by bolts, as 9, and rests upon the upper surface of the web portion of the Z-section.

indicated at 10, extends over the plate 5, and nailing strip 8 .and laps the outer face of said nailing strip in such manner that water from the roof is conducted past the outer face of the flange 7 of the plate 5.
Each of the posts 1 comprise preferably a single piece of sheet met-a1, bent-to form a channel section, with oppositely projecting.

The upper edge of each plate is bent overthe edge of the flange 6 of the plate 5 as at 15, and preferably laps a portion of the outer face thereof thus interlocking with the plate 5. Suitable cutout portions 16-16 are formed to accommodate the fastening bolts 9 and other parts of the car structure as 17. The flanges 14 terminate at their upper end, just beneath the web of the plate 5, and at their-O lower end, at the plane of the car floor. The bottom edge of each plate is formed with an inturned flange 18 preferably extending beneath the car flooring.
With the .lining removed any one, or all, of the sheathing plates may be readily lifted out for repairs or a new section may be sub- 49 stituted. WhatI claimis: 1. In a car, the combination with a series of posts and sheathing plates interlocking with said posts, of a lining for said car entirely on one side of said posts, said lining being fixed to said posts and serving to maintain said posts and plates in locked relation.
2. In a car, the combination comprising a plate,
series of plates, interposed means connecting said plates, and a lining coextensive with said means for said car maintaining said plates connected.
3. In a car, the combination comprising a series of right angularly flanged plates, means engaging the flanges of said plates for connecting said plates, and a continuous lining for said car bridging the space between adjacent posts and constituting the means for maintaining said plates connected.
4. In a car, the combination comprising a series of spaced apart flanged sheathing plates, posts engaging the flanges of said plates for connecting said plates, and a continuous lining for said car coextensive with and maintaining said plates connected.
5. Ina car, the combination comprising a series of spaced sheathing plates, means connecting said sheathing plates, and a continuous lining for said car constituting the sole means for maintaining said plates connected, said linin comprising parts extending transversely of said plates.
6. In a car, ajlwall structure comprising a series of spaced flanged sheathing plates, channel posts engaging the flanges of said plates, a filler within said posts and between said plates and means extending across said plates and be ng fixed to said filler adapted to lock said plates to said posts.
7. A car wall structure comprising a side plate, and sheathing plates interlocking with said side plate.
8. A car wall structure comprising a side plate, supports for said side plate, and sheathing plates interlocking with said supports and side plate. v
9. A car wall structure comprising a side channel shaped supports for said side plate, and sheathing plates having flanges interlocking with sai supports and side plate.

In a car, a pair ofspaced apart flanged sheathing plates, a channel post inclosing the flanges on adjacent plates, said posts having lateral flanges extending therefrom engaging said plates and a filler block in said channel engaging the flanges on the plates and a lining for the car engaging said plates and fastened to said filler.
21. In a car wall structure, a side plate and a sheathing plate having a bent upper edge hooked over said side plate and supported thereby.
22. A rectangular sheathing plate for a car wall structure having out-turned side,
flanges, an iii-turned bottom flange and a top channel edge.
23. A rectangular sheathing plate for a car wall structure having out-turned side flanges and an in-turned bottom flange and a top channel edge, said channel edge having cut-out portions therein.
