Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FELIX Koorr, a citizen of the United States, and ALFRED K. PEHRSON, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at No. 62 North Harrison Ave, Bellevue, and No. 1519 Davis Ave, N. S., Pittsburgh, respectively, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car Construction of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide a car having side posts which extend for substantially the full height of the side walls, and which at their lower ends are bifurcated and spread apart to form diagonal braces which may be secured to the side sill or bottom chord of the side wall.
Another object of the invention is to provide a car having side posts .which are slit at their lower ends, the portions resulting from such slitting being spaced apart to increase-the width of the lower ends of said posts.
A further object of the invention is to providea novel letter board and top plate constructiom'and a still further object of the invention is to provide a novel construction between the side posts of the car and the combined, letter board and top plate.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the construction, arrangements and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring now to the drawings, in which like reference characters refer to like parts, Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a'portion of a car embodying the invention, portions of the side sheathing being broken away; Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. dis a side elevational view of'a portion of the car showing a modification; Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on I the line 55 of Fig. 4:; Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional view taken onthe line 66 of Fig. 4, and Fig. 7 is a side elevational view of a portion of the car showing a modification of the invention.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, 1' indicates the side sill or bottom chord of the side wall, 2 the combined letter board and top plate or top chord of the side wall and 3 the side posts, whichposts at their lower end portions are connected with the side sills 1, and at theirupper end portions with the combined letter board and top plate 2.
Each of the posts3 comprisesanumber of U orchannel section having a Web 4 and flanges 5, 5 projecting inwardly therefrom, such flanges being bent at an angle to form flanges 6, 6, which flanges 6, 6 strengthen the web, and for a portion of their length are adapted to form portions of a Window frame. The lower end portion of the web 1 is slit in the direction of the length of the post and the resulting portions 7 and"8 are spread apart, and secured to the bottom chord 2, thus forming a wide'base for the post and also forming integral diagonal braces which are substantially of Z shape in cross section.
9 indicates the lower sheathing plates of the side wall which are secured to the side posts 3 below the windows and to the side sills 2. 10 indicates a belt rail'which may be secured to the sheathing plates 9 and to the posts-3. It will be understood that in some constructions this belt rail may be. omitted.
'The combination letter board and top plate, or topchord of'the side wall, comprises a plurality of members 11, each of which is provided with avertically disposed web 12 and top and bottom horizontally disposed flanges 13 and 14 respectively, the inner edge portion of the flange 14: being bent downwardly to 'form a "flange 15 which strengthens the'member, and may also form a portion of the window frame. To further strengthen the member 11 the web 12 is preferably provided with a corrugation '16 which may extend for substantially the full length of the member. Each of these members 11 overlaps adjacent posts and is secured to the webs 4 by rivets or other suitable means. It will be noted that each of'the posts 3 is slightly effect at its upper'end portion so that when the member 11 is secured to the post the outer surface 17 of the flange 1d will be in the same vertical plane as the outer surface 18 of the flange 5 of the post 3. It will further be noted that if desired the post 3 may be offset in a direction-transversely of the car and'that the end portions of the combined letter board and top plate maybe secured to the'post so that theouter surface of such letter board will be in the same vertical plane as the outer surface of the lower portion of the post.
To further strengthen the posts 3, and to form a strut therefor, members 19, preferably of channel form, may be provided which extend upwardly from and are connected with the bottom chord 1, through the medium. of a transverse member 31 of the under-frame and the gusset plate 32, and for a portion of their length may be secured to the web a of the post. Above the posts these members may be extended across the car to form carlines for the support of the usual. roof sheets.
In l, 5 and 6 a modified top chord 2 has been illustrated, each member 11 of which, instead of overlapping adjacent posts, is provided with end flanges 20 which may be secured to the flanges 5 of the posts.
111 Fig. 7 a modified construction has been illustrated which comprises a bottom chord 21, a top chord 22 and a post interposed. between and connected to such chords. Each of the posts comprises a member of U or channel section having a web 2i and flanges 25, projecting inwardly therefrom, which flanges at the upper end portion of the post are preferably bent outwardly and are cured to the top chord 22. lhe lower end portion of the web 2% is slit in the direction of the length of the post and the remaining portions 26 and 27 are spread apart and are secured to the bottom chord 21, thus forming a wide base for the post and also forming integral diagonal braces which are substantially of angle shape in cross section. To further strengthen the post a strut member 28 may be provided which at its upper end may be secured to the portions 26 and 27 of the post and at .its lower end. to the bottom chord 21. 29 indicates the letter board which may comprise a plurality of members 30, which are secured throughout their length to the top chord 22 and at their ends are secured to the posts 23.
The foregoing description has been limited to a passenger-car, but it will be understood that if desired the invention may be used in connection with freight cars.
Having thus described the invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A post for railway passenger cars comprising a channel shaped member of uniform cross section having one of its ends slit, both of the resultant portions of said end being bent away from each other to form diagonal braces, the other end of said member above said diagonal braces being substantially straight and a strut secured to said post and extending between said braces.
2. A post for railway passenger cars comprising a member of uniform. channel cross section having its web at one end slit, the
resultant portions of said end being bent away from each other to form diagonal braces, said portions being of less length than the remaining portion of said post, the remaining portion. of said member being substantially straight to its end, and a strut for said post extending between said braces.
A post for railway passenger cars comprising a member of uniform channel cross section having lateral flanges, said member having its web at one end slit, the resultant portions of said end being bent to form diagonal braces, said portions being Z shape i n cross section, the remaining portion of said member above said diagonal braces being substantially straight, and a strut secured to said post and extending between said braces.
l. In a passenger car side wall construction comprising top and bottom chords, a belt rail between said chords, and a post socured to said chords and belt rail, said post comprising av member of uniform channel shape having its end slit below said belt rail, the resultant portions being bent to form diagonal braces, the portion of said post above said belt rail being straight and retaining its original shape.
In a passenger car side wall construction comprising top and bottom chords, a belt rail, and a post secured to said chords, s id post having a. straight vertical upper portion, of uniform channel cross section between said belt rail and top chord, and having a pair of integral diagonal braces below said belt rail.
6. in a passenger car side wall construction comprising top and bottom chords, a post of uniform channel cross section secured to said. top and bottom chords, the lower end of said post being slit, portions of said end being bent to form diagonal braces the upper portion of said postbeing straight, and a belt rail secured to the straight portion of said post above the slit portion of said post.
7. A post for railway passenger cars having one of its ends bifurcated, the resultant portions of said end being of Z section and spaced apart and both inclined oppositely to each other, the other end of said post being substantially straight, and a strut for said post located between said braces.
8. in a passenger car, a side wall construction comprising top and bot-tom chords and a post of uniform channel cross section arranged between and secured to said chords, said post having one of its ends slit, both portions of such end being bent away from each. other to form diagonal braces, the opposite end of said post above said braces being substantially straight.
9. in a passenger car, a side wall con struction comprising top and bottom chords, and a channel. shaped post arranged between and secured to said chords, said post hav ing laterally extending flanges and having its lower end portion slit, portions of such end being bent away from each other to increase the effective width of said post, said end portions being of substantially Z section, the upper end portion of said post being substantially straight.
10. In a passenger car, a side wall construction comprising top and bottom chords, and a channel shaped post arranged between and secured tosaid chords, said post having its lower end portion slit, portions of such end being bent away from each other to form inclined portions of the post, and a strut extending between and connected tov said post and bottom chord.
11. In a'car side, the combination with a bottom chord, of a plurality of posts each having integral Z shaped diagonal braces secured to said chord, and a substantially straight vertical upper portion and a top chord comprising a plurality of members, each of said members extending only between adjacent posts and secured thereto.
12. In a car side, the combination with a bottom chord, of a plurality of posts, each having integral Z shaped diagonal braces secured tosaid chord, and a top chord comprising a plurality of members each of which extends only between and secured to the upper portions of adjacent posts, and each having a corrugation formed therein which extends from end to end of the member.
13. In a car side, the combination with a bottom chord, of a plurality of posts, each having integral diagonal braces secured to said chord, and a top chord comprising a plurality of corrugated members, each of which extends between and is secured to the upper portions of adjacent posts.
14. A post for railway cars comprising a member having a laterally flanged channel shaped and substantially straight upper portion and diverging Z shaped lower portions, and a strut for said post between said lower portions.
15. A post for railway cars comprising a member of channel form having lateral flanges, the lower portion of said post having its web slit, the resultant portlons of the end being bent apart to form Z shaped diagonal braces, the upper portion of sald post being substantially straight, and a strut secured to said post and extending between said braces.
16. A post for railway cars of channel section with laterally extending flanges having a substantially straight upper portion and having the lower end portion of its web slit centrally, both of the resultant portions of the said end being bent away from each other to form diagonal braces, and a strut secured to said upper portion and extending between said braces.
17. In a car, a side wall construction comprising top and bottom chords, webbed metal posts extending between and secured to said chords, and a belt rail secured to said posts, said. posts being of uniform channel cross section and having the ends of their webs slit below said belt rail, the resultant portions of said posts so slit being bent to form diagonal braces, the portions of said posts'above said belt railbeing substantially straight.
18. In a carside wall construction comprising top and bottom chords, a belt rail between'said chords and a post secured to said chords and belt rail, said post comprising a member of substantially uniform channel cross section having its end slit below said belt rail, portions of said end being bent apart to form diagonal braces, the portion of said post above said belt rail being substantially straight.
19. In a car wall construction comprising top and bottom chords, a belt rail, and a post connected with said chords and belt rail, said post comprising a member of uniform channel cross section throughout its length, having its end slit below said belt rail, portions of said end being bent to form diagonal wall braces, the portion of said post above said belt rail being substantially straight.
20. In a car wall construction comprising top and bottom chords, a belt rail, a post connected with said chords and belt rail, said post comprising a member, having its end slit below said belt rail portions of said end being bent to form diagonal braces,
and a strut extending between and connected with said post and bottom chord.
21. In a car wall construction comprising top and bottom chords, a post connected with said chords, said post having one of its ends bifurcated, the resultant portions of said end being bent apart to form diagonal braces, and a strut connected with said post and bottom chord.
22. In a car wall construction comprising top and bottom chords, a post connected with said chords, said post comprising a member of channel form' in cross section having the end of its web slit, the resultant portions of said end being spread apart, and members connected with said post and chords, the lower portions of said members forming a strut for the lower portion of said post.
23. In a car wall construction comprising top and bottom chords, a post connected with said chords, said post comprising a member of channel form in cross section having the end of its web slit, the resultant portions of said end being spread apart, and members connected with said post and chords, the lower portions of said members forming av strut for the lower portions of said post, and the portions of said members above said top chord forming roof carlines.
24:. In a car wall construction comprising top and bottom chords, a post connected with said chords, said post comprising a, member of channel form in cross section having the end of its web slit, the resultant portions of said end being spread apart, and
10 channel shaped members connected with said post and chords, the lower portions of said members forming a strut for the lower portion of said post.
