PECIFIOATIGN forming part of Letters Patent No. 752,282, dated February 16, 1904.
Applicatiin filed July 3,1902. Serial Kn. 114,204. on model.)
To (all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that l, Eowiinn G. CAUGHEY, a resident of Belleino, in the county of Allegheny 1 and State of Pennsyl vnnia, have: invented snow and useful improvement in Us rlines; and ldo hereby declare the following to he a full, clenr, and exact description thereof My invention relates to metallic cnrlincs or i box and similar cars; and it c( nsists in the cnrline hereinafter described anrl claimed,
in the eccompnnyin drav ings, Figure 1 is a cross-section through the upper portion of an ordinary box-car, showing my improved cnrline applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the to ;of the czir, taken in cross-section. Fig. 3 is a section showing a side view of one end of the enrline. Fig. 4 is at side view of one end t the enrline, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view; of the bracket for securing the car-line to the side plate of the car. My car-line may be emp oyed with any form of box or similar cars, and in the drawings it is shown applied to an ordinary box-oar having the top side plate 1, side and end Walls 2, and root lhe czirline l is formed of a, plate of metal pressed to shape and of a general 2 shape in cross-section, as shown in Fig. 2. It
shown, being deepest :11- the center of the car and tapering to ward the ends, and is somewhat how-shaped, as shown in Fig. 1, to give the necessary slope to the 001": of the car. The upper flange 5 and a. pc rtion of the web of the czirline are indented at several places to provide depressions or pockets 6 for receiving the wooden purlins 7, wt ich support the roof. The letter can be con eniently secured to the carline by being bolte d to the upper flange of the cnrline.
The cnrlineis secured to the sides of the car by means of n metall c bracket 8, which prefombly is of donble-zngle form, (is shown in Fig. '5, having one flange 9 riveted or bolted to the web of the czu'line, another flange l0 resting against the side plate of the our and riveted or bolted thereto, and the third flenge l 1.1, fitting in a suitable'recess in the side or side plate of the car. The. projecting flange ll of the supporting-bracket fitting in the reccss removes a large part of the weight of the enrline 21nd of the root from the bolts, so that the shearing strain on the hitter is much lessened. if preferred, the flange 11. on the bracket 8 may be omitted, and one of the flanges of the czirlinc as, for instance, the lower flnngc nmy extend beyond the ends of the web and the other flange, as shown M12, and lit into a recess in the side plate of the car, this projection serving to assist in supporting the can-line in the 5211118 manner as the flange 11 ot' the bracket The cnrlinc is of simple shape, easy to make, and its cross-section is such to secure the most effectual distribution of the metal therein.
WVlnit 1 claim is- 1. A metallic czirlinc of varying z-shaped cross-section having one of its fie; ges and a portion of its web indented or depressed to I'll",
ceive the purlins and having its lower flange projecting beyond the web at the ends of the eerline.
2. A metallic carline consisting of a flanged shape, and metallic brackets each having avertical portion secured to the webs of said enrline at its ends and provided with a flathorizontal flange projecting OLltWEtIflljgin the direction of the length of the carline.
3. A metallic carline consisting of a metallic member Z-shaped in cross-section, and metallic brackets secured to said cerline at its ends, said brackets having a vertical portion secured to the Web of the enrline, a vertical portion at right angles thereto adapted to bear against the'car side, and a flat horizontal portion at A right angles to said last-named vertical portion and projecting outwardly in the direction of the length of the cnrlinr.
in testimony whereof l, the said EDWARD G. lnneiinr, have hereunto set my hand.
