. UNITED STATES WINFIELD P. CARTER, OF RAYMOND, ILLINOIS.
DOOR-SECURER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 24, 1906.
Application filed February 23, 1906. Serial No. 302,559.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WINFIELD P. CARTER,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Raymond, in the county of Montgomery and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Door-Securer, of which the following is aspecification. I This invention relates to doorsecurers, and more particularly to devices of this character adapted to be carried within the pocket and which can be readily connected to a doorjamb and door without utilizing screws or other similar devices and which will serve to securely lock the door when closed.
With the above andother objects in view the invention consists of a base-plate on which is mounted a sliding bolt suitably re tained in position thereon. A leaf is hinged upon one end of the base-plate and has pointed lugs extending from one face thereof and adapted to be seated in recesses or openings within the base-plate when the device is not in use.
The invention also consists of certain other novel features of construction and combina tions of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings is shown the preferred form of the invention.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the fastener in position upon a doorj amb. Fig. 2 is a section therethrough and showing a door locked thereby, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device inverted.
Referring to the fi ures by numerals of reference, 1 is a base-p ate having suitably-disposed recesses 2 in one face, while secured to the other face of the plate is a cap 3, which serves to hold in position a sliding bolt 4. The cap is slotted longitudinally, as shown at 5, to receive a thumb-screw 6, which is adapted to project into any one of a series of open- An apertured ip 8 is formed at one end of face 1, while to the other end thereof is hinged leaf 9, having pointed lugs 10, extending from one face thereof, adapted to be seated within the recesses 2 by folding the leaf upon the plate. This leaf has an opening 11 suitably disposed therein.
When the device is not in use, the leaf 9 is folded against plate 1 with its lugs 10 within recesses 2, and with the parts in these positions the device can be convenientlycarried in the pocket without danger of injuring the fabric thereof. If it is desired to usethis device for locking a door which opens inward, the plate 1 is placed upon the inner face of the jamb 12 and the leaf is swung at right angles thereto, so as to overlap said jamb and with its lugs in contact therewith. When the door is closed, it will force the lugs into the jamb and hold them in such position. Bolt 4 is then slid longitudinally, so asto overlap the door, which will therefore be securely fastened. Should the door open outward, it is merely necessary to reverse the position of the device by placing the plate 1 on the door with the leaf overlapping the edge of said door. The bolt can then be moved so as to overlap the j amb. After the bolt has been moved into locking position the thumb-screw 6 is turned thereinto, so as to clamp upon the cap 3 and securely hold the bolt against movement.
If desired, the device can be permanently connected to a door or jamb by inserting screws or other fastening devices through the openings 7 and 11 after the plate and leaf have been properly disposed.
What is claimed is- 1. The combination with a recessed base having a sliding bolt thereon; of a leaf hinged to and adapted to fold upon the base, and engagin devices upon the leaf adapted to be seate in the recesses.-
2. A combination with a base and a leaf hinged thereto, of a slotted cap upon the base, a bolt slidably mounted within the cap, and means upon the bolt for securing it against movement.
3. The combination with a base and a leaf hinged thereto; of-a bolt slidably mounted upon the base and having a plurality of re cesses therein, a slotted cap for retaining the bolt upon the base and a manipulating device adjustably mounted in one of the recesses and slidable within the slot, and said device adapted to clamp upon the cap.
In testimony thatI claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WINFIELD P. CARTER.
