PATENT OFFICE.
MANCHESTER, ENGLAND.
Specification of Letters Patent.
-ratentecl July 1'7, 1906.
Application filed March 5,1906. Serial No. 304,202.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED ATKINSON, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Manchester, Lancashire, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Box and Bed Devices, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
his invention relates to combination box and bed devices designed for-display and other urposes; and the object thereof is to provi e an improved dolls and adapted to also serve as a dolls bed; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved combination box and bed and showmg the device in position for use as a bed, and Fig. 2a longitudinal section showing the device when used as a box or receptacle.
In the practice of my invention I provide an oblong box, case, or receptacle a, which may be composed of any desired material and the sides and ends of which may be decorated or constructed in any desired manner, and said sides may also be composed of openwork material, if desired, and in one end of the box or case a is secured at a a folding member I), which is adapted to be held in an upright position, as shown in Fig. 1, in which position it forms a headboard of a bed, and to be folded into the box or case a, asshown in Fig. 2.
Secured transversely of the bottom of the box or case a at a predetermined distance from the folding member I) is a transverse cleat or strip 0, and secured to the bottom front portion of the folding member I; is a supplemental folding member d, which when the folding member I) is raised, as in Fig. 1, rests a ainst the transverse cleat or strip .0 and hollls said folding member in a raised position, and the supplemental folding member d is also adapted to be folded horizontally beneath the folding member 6 when the latdevice of this class particularly designed for use as a receptacle for I ter is folded in the bottom of the box or case a, as shown in Fig. 2.
The free end portion of the folding member b is provided with a detachable arm 6, which is adapted to be connected therewith by means of projecting ears (2 secured to said folding member, said arm being provided with a downwardly-directed pin e which passes through said ears. The arm 6 is designed to serve as a support for bed-curtains, said curtains being indicated in dotted lines at f.
I In Fig. 2 I have shown the device in the form of a box or case provided with a 'cover g, and, as hereinbefore stated, my improvement is primarily used as a display box or case for dolls and also as a bed for dolls, and
in practice the combination box and bed or a number of them may be made up, and each is provided with a doll, and in Fig. 2 a doll his shown in the box or case. The above description applies to the manufacturers or dealers in devices of this class, and a combination box or bed is sold with each doll, and whenever it is desired to convert the device into a dolls bed the cover 9 is removed, the folding member I) is raised into the position shown in Fig. 1, the supplemental folding member d is also placed in the positionshown in Fig. 1, and a pillow, one of which is indicated at i in Fig. 2, is placed on the supplemental folding member d, and the device is then ready to serve as-a bed and the doll is placed therein.
It will be understood, of course, that the arm e is connected with the folding member I), as shown in Fig. 1, and the bed-curtains (indicated in dotted lines atf) are suspended thereover.
I have also shown at j in Fig. 2 a coverlet, sheet, or similar device, and in practice a number of these may be employed, and a mattress may also be placed in the box or case, if desired.
As thus constructed it will be seen that the device may be converted into a box or case, whenever necessary, in which the doll may be placed, or into a bed whenever desired, and any desired quantity, number, or style of bedding, bedclothing, and the like may be provided.
Having fully described my invention, what claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A device of the class described, comlIO prising a box or case provided at one end with a folding member adapted to be held in an upright position and to be folded into the box or case, means for holding said member in an upright position, and a detachable arm connected with said upright member and projecting longitudinally over the box or case, substantially as shown and described.
2. A device of the class described, comprising a box or case, a folding member secured in one end thereof, a supplemental folding member secured to the bottom of the first-named folding member and adapted to hold it in an upright position and also to serve as a pillow-support, and a detachable arm connected with the upright member and projecting when in position longitudinally over the box or case, substantially as shown and described.
3. A combination box and bed, comprising an oblong box or case, a folding member secured in one end thereof and adapted to be held in an upright position, a cleat or strip secured to the bottom at a predetermined distance from said end, a supplemental folding member secured to the first-named folding member and operating in connection with said cleat or str'p to hold the first-named folding member in an upright position, said supplemental folding member being also adapted to serve as a pillowsupport, an arm adapted to be connected with the firstnamed folding member and to project longitudinally over the box or case, said arm being adapted to serve as a curtain-support, substantially as shown and described.
4:. A combination box and bed, comprising an oblong box or case, a folding member secured in one end thereof and adapted to be held in an upright position, a cleat or strip secured to the bottom at a predetermined distance from said end, a supplemental folding member secured to the first-named folding member and operating in connection with said cleat or strip to hold the first-named folding member in an upright position, said supplemental folding member being also adapted to serve as a pillow-support, an arm adapted to be connected with the firstnamed folding member and to project longitudinally over the box or case, said arm being ada ted to serve as a curtain-support, an
sai box or case being also provided with a removable cover, substantially as shown and described.
5. A combination box and bed for the purpose speoified, comprising an oblong box or case, a folding member secured in one end thereof and adapted to be held in an upright position, a supplemental folding member secured to the bottom of the first-named folding member and ada ted to serve as a pillowsupport, and a curtaln-support secured to the first-named folding member when the latter is in an upright position, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in
resence of the subscribing witnesses, this 16th day of February, 1906.
' ALFRED ATKINSON.
