Description

Oct. 25, 1927.

m I ATTORNEY Patented a. 25, 1927.
UNITED STATES ANNA-BELL RYALS :MOQRE, NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
COVER Bowen.
Application filed May 31,
This invention relates to bed coverings and has special reference to a covering for infants beds which I may term a baby blanket although it is to be understood that the construction may apply to spreads, coverlets and in fact'all similar articles of bed clothes. It is also to be understood that the device may be used either as a covering for the remainder of the. bed clothes or may be used beneath the ordinary bed spread either next to the infant or over one or more layers of the bed clothes.
It is a well recognized fact that infants are prone to kick the covering off of themselves and thus may become chilled with a resultant illness and injury to their health.
Attempts have heretofore been made to remedy this kicking off of the bed clothes by providing a bed covering with tie strings by which it may be secured to the suitable portions of the bedstead or crib used for the infant. The difliculty with the use of such devices is that it is not easy to regulate the proper tautness for the bed clothes as enough room must be left for the usual kicking movements of the infant or it will become fretful and will not sleep. Some of: u
gatheringl i is formed centrally of this end.
these devices have been provided with tapes around the marginal edges and in other instances the upper or head end of such a covering has had an elastic detachably connected thereto in an attempt to allow some play or 'looseness in the clothes. In the present instance a gathering of each end of the material forming the covering is efiected in the central part, taping being used in spaced relation to the marginal edges of the covering to leave these edges free fortucking in and the upper or head end having the tape arranged in a tubular form to hold a strip of elastic webbing so that tie springs attached to this upper end at the corners of the rectangle formed by the tape may be used to hold the covering in 4 proper position while at the same time ample, room is left for the infant to kick and roll without danger of its becoming uncovered.
The principal objects of the invention are therefore to provide a bed covering suitable for use over infants wherein the central portion of the covering will be transversely athered at each end to provide room for kicking and rolling of the infant and wherein elastic means will be used to eifeet the gathering at the head end.
1927 Serial No. 195,346.
With the above and other objects in view as Wlll be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts geremafter fully described, illustrate in ie accom an in drawin s n cifically claimed. y g b a d spa In the accompanying drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and:
Figure 1 is a plan View of a baby blanket constructed in accordance with this invention. f
Figure 2 is a section on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
In. carrying out the objects of this inven- -tion a suitable rectangular piece of material 10 is taken, the material being of any desired thickness or weight and character and in spaced relation to the side edges of this material there is secured a pair of reinforcmg tapes 11 which are held to the material by stitching 12. At the foot e'nd'a tape 13 1s slmllarly secured to the material but this tape 15 of such length that a box-pleat or At the other end atape 15 is secured between the tapes 11 and beneath this tape extends a strip of elastic webbing 16 which is,
of less length than the tape so that when the ends of this webbing are secured by the stitching 17 the tape 15 and consequently the head end of the fabric 10 will be gathered as clearly indicated in F igure 1. Thus within the rectangle formed by the tape the material of the covering is loose and baggy' while Without the rectangle the marginal portions of the covering are free for tucking around or under the mattress. At each corner of the rectangle formed by the tapes there is provided a pair of side tie strings 18 and a second pair of end tie strings 19 as shown in Figure 1 for these tie strings are used to tie the covering to suitable points on the crib so asto prevent it slipping either laterally orlongitudinally at its central part while, as before noted, the marginal portions are free for tucking.
By means of this construction the loose central portion of the covering permits any of the ordinary rolling and kicking movements of the infant while at the same time the covering is securely held against displacement and the marginal portions will not become loose when tucking under the mattress.
There has thus been provided a simple and eflicient device of the kind described and for the purposespecified.
Having'thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:
1. A bed cover comprising a body portion having elastic gathers extending substantially across one of the ends thereof near the I body portion.
3. A bed cover comprising a body portion having elastic gathers extending substantially across one end thereof near the edge whereby the said body portion may be stretched to open and close said gathers and having a box pleat near the opposite end thereof.
4. A cover comprising a rectangular piece of fabric having reinforcing means spaced inwardly from the ends thereof to provide free marginal portions, elastic gathering means cooperating with said fabric adjacent an end reinforcing means and extending substantially across said end whereby the cover may be stretched at said end, said fabric having atan end opposite said first mentioned end gathers of a non-elastic character.
5. A cover comprising a rectangular piece of fabric having reinforcing means spaced inwardly from the sides and ends of the fabric to provide free marginal portions, elastic gathering means cooperating with said fabric adjacent an end reinforcing means and extending substantially across said end whereby the cover may be stretched at said end said fabric having at an end opposite said first mentioned end gathers 0 of a non-elastic character.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
