TO ,ALL WHOM IT-MAY CONCERN:
Be it 'known that I, GILBERT F. TAYLclQof New York, in the county of -ll'ew York, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Guards for`Carpet-Sweepingv Machines; and I do h ereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enablefothers skilled in the art to make 'and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of' this specilication, in which- I Figure 1 is a plan'or top view of my invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse section of the saine, taken in the line zw, of hg. 1.
Similar lettersof reference indicate like parts. A
The carpet-sweeping devices, which are now much used instead of the ordinary brooms, on account of not raising any clust during the sweeping-operation, have only one material objection, and that is,'that furniture is very liable to be disfigured and injured by the case of the implement being brought in contact with thelegs of chairs and tables, Sac., the hard metallic cases, even by a very slight contact or rub, abrading the varnish, and leaving unsightly scratches.
Mylinvention consists in the application of al pad to the case, the pad being constructed and arranged inv such a manner that it'will eil'ectually .prevent the abrasion' of furniture, and admit of 4being readily applied 4to and detached from the case.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, A.- represents the case of Va carpet-sweeping machina-B the cylin-. drical brush, and el the dust-chambers. l I
These parts may be constructed in the 'usual way, and therefore do not require a special description.
C is a pador cushion, made in the form of a narrow bag, and out of leathenprepared cloth, or other suitable material, stuffed with hair, inoss, or other substance.
The ends of this pad or cushion are connected by elastic straps e, one or more..
This pad or cushion is slipped over the case A, and vitis madeof such a length that thestraps e will be stretched where it is fitted on the case, and-the straps have suicient tension to retain the pad or cushion in' l position.
By this simple means, furniture will be protected from abrasion, the pad or cushion serving as an eiiicient guard. It may be constructed at a small cost, quite inappreciable, -and will, without doubt,l be used by all who employ carpet-sweeping devices in their dwellings.
I do not claim broadly the use of rubber placed'around the edges of brushes, '&cl, to prevent injuring furniture, for thisis old; but, having thus described my invention, I
I claim as new, and desire to -secure byLetters Patent-v- The placing around the body, A, of a carpet-sweeping'machine, the pad C,`connected at its endsvby thev elastic strip e, so asvto be removable at pleasure, as herein described.
' GILBERT F. TAYLOR.
