Be it known that l, JOHN RUSSELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cananea, in the State of Sonora, Republic of Mexico, have invented a new and useful Ball-Bearing Screw-Jaclnof which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lifting-jacks, and has for an object to provide a device of the class embodying new and improved features of durability, utility, and eliciency.
A further object of the invention is to provide a lifting-jack embodying improved means for holding down a car-wheel and axle While the box is being lifted and supported to permit a change of brosses.
A further object of the invention is to provide in a lifting-jack an improved bell-bearing for supporting the Weight carried by the jack and reduce ictional resistance in iift llVith these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as Will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the aecompanying drawings, and particularly pointed ont in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made Without departing froml the spirit or sacriiicing any of the advantages of this invern tion,

In its preferred embodiment the improved litingjack forming the subject-matter of this application comprises a base 10 havi the upstanding internaliy screw threade flange 11 and a depression or cavity 12 centrally of the ange. Within the flange 11 is threaded a substantially cylindrical standupon the shaft 16, the latter being journaled ard 13, having one Wali attened at 14 to form a housing for a pinion 15, mounted in the Wall or section 14 of the standard, as shown.

Upon and concentric with the member 20 is rigidlyr mounted the bevelgear 25, engaging with the pinion 15, and a screw 26 is rig-v idl;v7 carried by the gear axial to the gear and 'standard ifi. pon the screw 26 is threaded a nut 27 smaller than the internal diameter of the standard 13, and inter osed between the nut and interior walls o the standard is 'a veitically-slidable sleeve i8, having en a shoulder 29, adapted to engage the nut. The base 10 of the jack is proportioned to stand upon a tie, as 32, and a nose 33 is formed rigid upon or integral with the standard 13 and proportioned to bear upon a rim 34 of the car-Wheel Where it stands upon a rail, as 35.
Upon the shaft 16 externally of the standard is rigidlyY mounted the ratchetwheel 3o, and the arms 37 and 3S of the biurcatcd lever 39 are pivot-ed upon the shaft. Between the arms 37 and'SS are pivoted the pawls 4l?, as by the pin 4i, and provided with any approved forin of springs to permit either to be thrown into operative contact with the ratchet-wheel 36.
it will be obvious that the sleeve 2S and integral lifting-bead 29 may be lifted at Will from the standard and from engagement with the nut 27 to permit the proper liibricating or removal -oi the screw, nut, gear, and other parts.
From the foregoing it is believed that the use, operation, and advantages of the improved jack will be fully and clearlyunderstood.

A lifting-jack embodying a base pro vided with a central depression, a tubular standard detaehably secured to the base, a screw disposed Within the standard and provided with a bevel-gear, a plate earried by the gear and provided with depending eonoentrie flanges defining raceways, a pinion engaging the gear for rotating the serew and a bearing-plate earried by the standard and interposed between the base and the een eentrie flanges.

A lifting-jack embodying a base having a threaded opening, a tubular standard having a threaded portion for engagement with the threads on the base and provided with an inwardly-extending wear-plate,y a serew disposed within. the standard and having a bevel-gear secured thereto, a plate secured to the bevel-gear and provided with raeeways, antifrietion-balls disposed between the raeeways andfwear-plate, a nut engaging the screw, a sleeve slidably mounted within the standard and provided with an annular shoulder for engagement with the nut, a pinion engaging the bevel-gear and means for rotating the pinion to aetuate the screw.
