LIFTINGr-JACK.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 11, 1917- Application filed March 22, 1917. Serial No. 156,859.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE O. CoNDrro, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at lVingdale, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lifting- Jacks, of which the following is a speclfication.
This invention relates to lifting jacks and has for its primary object the provision of a lifting jack provided with a novel ratchet means which can be readily adjusted for operation in either direction.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a lifting jack which is of extremely simple construction, thoroughly reliable and eflicient in purpose and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the construction, it is thought will be readily apparent when the description and claims are read in connection with the accompanying drawings of which Figure 1 is a fragmentary vertical sectlon through the jack.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings by reference characters, A, designates a base or standard provided with a handle B, said standard is provided at its upper portion with an interiorly threaded opening to receive the lifting screw C. The upper portion of the lifting screw is provided with an enlarged 1ntegrally formed flange l0, and is provided with a substantially reduced upstanding portion 11. The upper end of the portion 11, is provided with a centrally arranged semi-circular recess 12, for the reception of a ball bearing 13. removable head 14, is adapted to be fitted to the portion 11, and is provided with a semi-circular recess 15, which co-acts with the recess 12, to form a race for the bearing.
The set screw 16 is threaded horizontally through the head 14 to lock the same to the portion 11. 17 designates a disk which is secured to the screw 0, immediately above the flange 10 by a plurality of screws 18, said disk is provided with a ring of substantially rectangular and elongated open ings 19, arranged adjacent the periphery thereof. The disk 17 is provided with an upstanding annular flange 20, and in superposed relation to said. disk and bearing thereon is a spider member 21 provided with radially arranged arms 22,- enlarged at their outer extremities and provided with openings 23 which are of substantially the same shape as the openings 19. The spider is further provided with an outstanding arm 24: provided with a socket 25 for the reception of the operating handle 26. Dogs 27 are provided and adapted to be inserted through the openings 23 in the arms 22, and extended to engage with the openings 19 of the disk in order that the spider may be locked to the disk for operating the screw C. The dogs are provided with inclined faces 28 at their lower portions and upstanding lugs 29 at their upper extremities, said lugs 29 are provided as stops to prevent the dogs from falling through the openings 23. When it is desired to operate the jack, the dogs are inserted in the openings 23 of the arms of the spider and arranged so that the inclined faces are remote from the direction of travel of the spider. It will thus be seen that by reversing the dogs, the ratchet mechanism is reversed. When operating the device for lifting a body, the screw 16 is loosened and the upper extremity of the portion 11 of the screw operates through the ball-bearing against the under side of the head 14, thereby minimizing any friction at this point.
From the foregoing description, it is thought that the nature and purpose of the structure will be readily understood and therefore a more extended description has been omitted.
What is claimed as new is 1. A lifting jack comprising a base, an
upright screw threaded therein, a disk fixed to the upper end of the screw and having a ring of openings, a spider overlying the disk and including a central portion rotatably mounted upon and concentric with such disk and a series of radial arms whereof one has a radial socket in its outer end and the remainder have upright openings in their outer ends, a handle for insertion in said socket, and a series of vertically movable dogs interchangeably inserted in said openings, each hanging below the spider-arm and having one abrupt edge and one beveled edge to engage the openings in said disk beneath, and each dog having a lug at its upper end-to prevent its passage through the opening in its supporting v 21 A- lifting jack, comprising", a base, a
lifting screw adjustable therethrough, a disk secured to the upper portion of said screw, openings through said disk adjacent the outer periphery thereof, a ratchet mechanism including a central portion, arms extending radially therefrom, a handle within one of the arms, openings provided in the outer extremities of the remaining arms, removable and interchangeable dogs adapted 10 to be received in said openings, and extending below the lower face of said arms for engagement with the openings in the disk, the dogs being inclined on the lower portion of one of their faces to allow the dog to ride over the openings in the disk when the handle is operated in one direction and engage in the openings of the disk when the handle is operated in the reverse direction.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
GEORGE G. CONDITO.
